This review will be less wordy than my usual ones. I'm going to go more picture oriented because It's very hard to describe this blade and pictures can show you everything. Forgive the keyboard in the pictures instead of my usual outdoor shots. It's raining and dark currently. For those of you who were at the SBG meetup in GA... Find the "Jack Rabbit" yet? (great cd John)
I've been talking with John Lundemo and James Fang about a ton of projects over the past few months. Courtesy of them, I've broken my "I will not spend more on a sword than I did on my computer" rule. Courtesy of them, I have many swords in the works. Courtesy of them, I have two good friends who provide me with pointy objects and good conversation.
I honestly didn't plan this purchase. I was talking to James about a companion blade for my Dragon*Con greatsword and he pointed this out to me. I told him: Make it black and give it a curved guard and it's sold... Lo and behold, It's mine now.
Historical overview
Historical accuracy of pieces and my opinion of pieces don't always add up. In fact they rarely do.
Stilettos were designed as piercing weapons against heavily armored targets and assassination weapons against unarmored targets, usually just a long pointy rod of metal with a little cross guard. Some had some edges on them but it wasn't the intent of the blade to be used as a cutter.
Full Disclosure
I got a bit of a discount on this dagger because I'm a return customer. I also got free shipping because i picked it up in person. I'm not being paid by James or John to promote their stuff.
Initial Impressions
James placed this blade in my hand as I sat down to begin the drive to the SBG Georgia meet up and I fell in love. i didn't really have time to look at it because it was 5am and we were already late out the door, So I placed it back in the bag, in the trunk, and only saw it in the light when we got to Sean's house.
I'm still tripping out over this knife and Instantly named it "Mr. Pokey". It's a gentle name for a scary weapon. Kinda like calling Sean "Sean" Instead of "Guy with urban dictionary memorized"
Statistics
Blade: 35 cm
Handle: 9cm
Overall Length: 48cm
Guard: 12cm across tip to tip
POB: ~1 inch
COP: Piercing weapon
Weight: Fairly light... Can't find my kitchen Scale
The Blade
Being a stiletto, it's designed for poking things. If the name I gave it didn't give this away, seeing it will make you squeal with joy or fear. It's got a raised cross section instead of a fuller and this blade is STIFF. I don't think I could bend this blade without a vice. I don't particularly want to though. This blade goes in smooth, comes out smooth, and leaves a HUGE hole because of this raised ridge.
The Handle
It's a lundemo Invisi-seam. Black leather over cord over wood. I'm not sure if it's intentional but this thing fits my small hands as if it was made for them. Interestingly enough, the blade was half made when I claimed it, so this is either a fluke or John just being awesome.
The Guard
John was going to do a straight cross guard. I asked for a curved one. I got a curved one. It's hammer forged steel, smooth, and looks sexy.
The Pommel
I was nervous when James said it was a brazil nut. Terrified when he showed me the unshaped pommel for it... The thing was like 3 inches long! I love this one. It's about an inch and a half wide, an inch high, and blackened forged steel. The peen nestles in the back and isn't disguised more than it needs to be.
The Scabbard
This sheath was a "favor for a fee". It's a very heavy duty leather sheath with a little belt loop. The belt loop is a bit skinny (or as James said: your belt is too wide) but it looks great, is well made, and I'm happy.
Handling Characteristics
It's a piercer. It's scary. It slides in and slides out and the bottles know fear as they bleed water. I'll have a video clip up from the SBG meet up as soon as James finishes editing.
Conclusions
Pros
-Odinblade with odinquality
-Gorgeous raised ridge
-stabs better than anything I've seen
-gorgeous fittings
Cons
-Cost prohibitive to most people on this forum
-Wait time to complete
-Daggers illegal in many states
The Bottom Line
If I posted an image to explain what I thought of this blade, I'd probably be forum banned...
Less explicit version. I love it. I've never seen a dagger quite like this before and it's likely that I won't see one again.
