thanks with good glue the wood core should be just as sturdy as hollowing out a single piece would be (maybe even more) I want to try burning out a grip though

I'm always worried that burning out a grip will destroy the temper of the tang. I suppose the answer is to fabricate a piece of metal the same dimensions as the tang and use that as the burning iron, but I'd think that'd take too long...

Thanks for the excellent tutorials. I have a Hanwei bastard sword and want to make a bigger grip. This helps a lot and the glued wood core is an great idea. One question, what kind of wood do you?
Thanks

I tried burning out a grip, last year on a moat sale blade. What a pain in the arse. First drilling out the pilot hole (my bit wasn't long enough, so I had to drill through both ends and meet in the middle). Then cleaning up the pilot hole a bit. Then heating up the tang and pushing it through. I probably had to heat it up at least 30 times before it burned completely through. Used a propane torch and took forever to heat up. In short, I'll stick to doing a build up type, next time I mount a new grip.

Update , the grip looks fantastic, a tight squeeze - tapped into place nicely! Much improved over the original.
Any plans for a scabbard tutorial Chris? A green matching EMSHS one would be awesome!
cheers,
Rob

How would I make a grip if the pommel that I was going to re-attach was totally different? Would I have to re-do the whole thing?
Because I am trying to redo the pommel on a CS Italian Longsword and make into a usable sword. The pommel on the original is awful.

Start by taking the old one off. If the new one will be peened on then you do that first. After peening the new pommel on you can continue to make a new grip following the tutorials and noting the the peened pommel variate notes in the videos. If the new pommel will be hex nut or similar, you will need to seat it on the tang where it will be finally placed so you can measure the length the grip will be.

I think if you route using Findlithui's method I think you can get a tight fit but I've never tried it.

Awesome, thank you! I'm going to try making my own guard, grip and pommel. I ordered the bare blade, but it hasn't arrived yet. So I'm trying to get as many measurements as I can, just to start scribbling some ideas.
