Hey peeps, I was cruising Etsy yesterday, you know, cuz I sometimes do things like that, and I found a cool little shop. Check out this guy's (or peoples) wares. I was immediately struck at how clean the lines were on things, then on closer examination I realized that there seems to be care and love and research put into these things. Symmetry, subtlety and taste. The prices are very good too. www.etsy.com/shop/RoyalOakArmour ... eller_info I just commissioned a custom Great Helm from him. I have confidence I'll get what I want. cheers!

I know it's a different category, but man, that Vendel helm is gorgeous.

So I got a progress shot of the helm I ordered. I'm pretty excited. He said he hot works some pieces, especially anything that needs crisp lines. Just a few more days until completion. A helm made to my head and face measurements!

Looking forward to reviews/impressions of this, I think he is an armorer I ran across once or twice before in name but never checked out.

Looking at it, for me it is a little lightweight for full sparring, but given he does custom orders, i'm sure he'd tweak the ga of metal. When you get it, i'd love to see a review of how the construction is done and LOTS of pics. Not many sell a helm that would work for re-enacting that is the 'spectacle' viking helm.

You will need to take a new Avatar picture with your new helm. Now hopefully you can find another smilie face balloon for the picture.

Hey!
Yeah, I got it. Sorry I haven't had time to post the review. I am very impressed with it, so if you needed an affirmation before you dealt with this armourer I'd say go for it. Get something 14 gauge, my 16 gauge is probably good enough, but it's right there on the edge of debate whereas a 14 gauge piece would be right in the safe zone. Jeffrey Myers, the armourer of Royal Oak is an honest and very smart guy. He's been to some pretty cool (and distant) museums to do research and he has a very good library of reference materials. If this helps: the Great Helm I got was based on his previous design made to fit me with arming clothes and maille in place. Further, I was lucky enough to find some very rare photographs of the Dargen Helm original from some other angles (like the back). These photos were incorporated into modifying his original design. He was GLAD to receive more photos of the artifact because he can make further reproductions more accurate. So, this guy is legit. He also thrives on interaction with the client. So when he says to ask about custom orders he means it.
The helm's straps are also buckskin. I wanted straps. I got buckskin straps, which is top of the line as far as I am concerned after studying high medieval buckskin sword belts. I'll order again, it was an excellent deal and the helm is executed as well as any of my A&A swords (sorry, I don't own any Albions yet).
So, for me to get a more accurate reproduction of this helm I would really need measurements and geometry from the original.
Life has been very busy, but I plan on a review when I get the chance. Man, if you want something, have him make it, he doesn't require a down payment and will send pictures of the finished product before he asks for your approval and payment. I definitely got my money's worth and I will order again as soon as I can, once I figure out what that might be. The demi-gauntlets look very tempting.
cheers

Excellent... If he's this skilled, I'll want to snag a piece before his prices rise.
