Another thing you can use instead of sandpaper is a set of Arkansas stones. You can get them in 6or so different harnesses that do a rough finish, medium finish and a fine finish. They are fairly cheap and will last you forever. They also make small versions of the stones that are easy to carry in the field. I like some of their tri-stones where its a wooden triangle with a small stone of each type on it. Great for when you don't want to lug all of you files, stones and sandpaper with you. Here's one place you can get them: www.hallsproedge.com/index.php or you can just google Arkansas stones, more than one place sells them

Arkansas stone are pretty nice. I have a small one I use for touch-ups and stuff.
impatience is a killer in this game. yup you can test your edge before your done but if you want a really good edge you have two choices: leave the bur edge on until the end or make a new bur edge with every grit level you do. the second method is a lot more work and doesn't really give a better edge (it's debatable but the difference is slight if anything).

Progress! I have progress to 1000grit , even though i went straight from 400 grit to 1000grit, I was still able to cover 400grits scratch pattern, barely though. The edge shines like a mirror, i tried to cut paper and most of the time it would do. Ive also tried bottles and was able to cut them, but it wasnt a clean straight line. Any advice?

cutting bottles well is more reliant on your form than the sharpness of your sword, though a very sharp sword will cover up a little bit of slop on your part. if it will cut paper sometimes or better it is certainly sharp enough but it may not be a forgiving edge. so practice your edge alignment and getting good tip speed.
