Hello all. I viewed the great tutorial here about handle wrapping. Very informative. I have a question though. Does the wrap need to be "captured" by the guard and pommel? In other words, can a handle that has the same diameter as the guard and pommel, where they meet, still be wrapped? Or is the diameter of the handle usually the thickness of the wrap material less than the guard/pommel? Make sense? My concerns are making the handle too thick and also the wrapping becoming loose because it is not captured by the "shoulders" of the guard/pommel. Anyone time you could give to the subject would be appreciated. Also, can anyone lead me to a source of material for the cord itself? Thanks.

Here is a good video showing the Rodell cutting jian disassembled.
The wrap is not fitted under the fittings but, it is about level with them. It is a pretty continuous flow from fittings into grip wrap.
Now that isn't to say you can't have a little wider grip, especially if it would actually improve your hand grip. However if it would widen it too much for your hands to grip comfortably then you might consider removing a little material before putting the grip on. Also like you I would wonder if there might be issue of loosening if the wrap was not captured by the fittings. So would suggest a bit of counter sinking of the grip at least where it meats the fittings.

Thanks for posting that. I'm pretty sure that the wrapping needs to be "captured" by the fittings. On Graham Cave's website he mentions having to thin down the handles the thickness of the wrapping so that the wrap won't slip around. Anyone know of a source for 4mm wrapping? It is amazingly hard to find. It is basically tsuka ito for a tanto. I have a few leads but any info you could provide would be great. Thanks.

Unfortunately the wrap for Chinese swords is not as popular as Japanese. I have never seen anyone selling Chinese specific wrap. Or even a good source for Chinese sword fittings of any type really. From what I have seen is that the main suggestions is to visit your fabric stores and look for "cotton ribbon" or find leather cord for your your wrap from Tandy or other leather sources if your going with a leather wrap. Others have suggested gutting paracord for the wrap and other such alternatives.
Basically from what I have seen you are sort of left to find a suitable cord from what ever you may find. There seems to not be anyone who really sells fittings or wrap material specific to Chinese swords. Which to me is really sad. I would think at least the cord for grip wraps would be offered somewhere as it is something that does wear out.
