Don't ask me how he did it, but the damn thing is blue. The whole blade. It glints bright blue when swung in light. I'm working quickly to empty a jug of Chocolate Milk as I type. The guard is also amazing. The way it rests in hand is very natural, it just kind of cups my thumb on the top and slides over my pointer finger. The Sheath, even though it's only leather, is good quality leather with a very attractive color and stitch work.
The finish is obviously rough, as I requested, and I just keep staring at that blue hue. It's mesmerizing. I worry it could be an issue with the heat treatment, I'm working out a way to test that. The bevels are ground unevenly, and I think the poor lil' bowie might have taken a hit in shipping (the edge wavers about 4 in. from the guard.) I really wish the handle simply continued all the way to the pommel as well. That said, those small complaints pale in comparison to how awesome this thing is. It's all most exactly how I'd pictured it. The Roman Numerals for 2012 filed on the spine is a very classy addition.
What more can I say? Bring on the Wolves  . I think I might actually do a cutting vid if I get the chance (no wolves will be harmed in the making of this video.)

The blue hue to your blade was caused by being over heated during tempering. The blade will most likely be on the soft side now. To have the right temper it should have been straw color.

Well crap. I figured as much, I just wasn't sure. Thanks for the heads up fallen.
So, no wood processing for the Bowie haha.

It can be saved just have to renormalize, anneal, heat treat and temper the blade agian. How is the handle secured on. If I were you I would contact the man you got it from. From what you've said it got mutiple problems doubt if the waves in the blade came from shipping was there any damage to the shipping box.

the hue is most likely from a vinegar bath or other acidish bath, ive seen other forgers do this, it helps remove scale and adds a layer of protection with the oxidized layers

I got an email from Dan. He said the blade was heated to about 550°, which was explained to me as a happy median between a sharp edge and elasticity. Should be in the low 50's on the Rockwell scale. I can't refute that logic, ymmv.

550 Degrees would give it the blue color if you are happy with the low 50's ok. I prefer 56 to 58. The blade would still be plenty flexiable and hold a edge longer.

Believe me, I'm not arguing that it's superior. It's different, and I'm sure I'd rather have an edge that lasted as opposed to something easy to touch up. Still, I like it's application on this particular piece. The aesthetic and execution of this knife is consistent, if imperfect, from point to pommel. I'm really fond of it.
That being said, I'd be interested in a companion piece from you if you have some free time in your schedule.
