I've been looking at this sword for a very long time now. Does anyone have experience with it? I'm thinking rayskin grip, semi-mirror polish, 30" T-10 DH blade. www.jin-shi.com/jian.html

I would check first if that sword is still available first. I knew they had some left as of the begining of the year, but I don't know if they have any left. I had heard that they where embarking on a new series of Qing era Jians, which is what I've been waiting over a year and a half for. I've heard heard really good things about Jin-Shi swords, especially as far as handling and performance (I'm a martial arts teacher, not really a sword collector. I do, however, own three different Hanwei Jians).

I haven't seen anyone mention getting a tang jian from Jin Shi yet, I too have been drooling over the Jin Shi Tang jian and would love to hear someone review one. Jin Shi doesn't do production anymore but custom swords only, so you need to order then it will be made to your specs. I noticed earlier posting to the Tang vs Qing post that Jin Shi is doing some more restructuring. From everything I have seen about Jin Shi, they are well worth the $ to get. I think you would be happy with a tang style jian from them and think I would too, I just can't afford one right now. Jin Shi has a very good reputation for quality jian and dao at quite reasonable prices for them being custom. They cost about the same or less than many of the production jian. If your fairly ready to get a jian I would suggest contacting Garret from Jin Shi and opening a dialogue with him about what you want and how long it will take. From what I remember it has typically taken 3 months from order to receiving your jian. Also you can talk with him about the features you would like and find out possibly options or practicalities you had not considered yet.

ineffableone, just a heads up, at the current moment I'm not sure that Jin shi is doing customs either ( at least not Qing). Check out the post "has anyone heard from Garrett C lately". I was so bummed. I guess patience may pay off.

If you email Jin-Shi, you will get an order form back that gives you your options. There is no really custom work being done by Jin-Shi right now. There are certain limited options based on certain basic designs.
Han Jian, Tang Jian, Qing Jian, etc, sanmai, twistcore, monosteel, DH, Monosteel, rayskin grips/scabbards...
Send Jin-Shi the email and take a look at the order form. Make sure to mention SBG for a discount. %10, I think.
But if what you want falls into their options, you will be very happy with it. Jin-Shi is about the best you get for jian without shelling out serious cash.
