hey yall
I have a new hanwei Hand and a half practical sword thats got a bit of a loose pommel. You can't actually see the pommel move but you can definitely feel it when swinging/striking etc.
I'm not real knowledgeable of sword "terms" but I believe the sword has a peened pommel.
anything I can do that is relatively simple?
thanks!
I'm new btw, site looks great. cheers!

Hot peened or cold peened? Hot peened is better and shouldn't loosen, but since yours is coming loose I would imagine it's more likely cold peened. The upside is that cold peens can be tightened up by re-peening. If you do this too often then the wood handle could start to stress and crack, since you are compressing the assembly. Make sure your handle is well-oiled and in good condition. All you need to do is use a ball peen hammer to tap down the peen at the end of the pommel until it mushrooms out and tightens the whole assembly. A cold peened sword will often have a softer metal rod welded to the end of the tang, which goes through the pommel. That mild steel rod is what you're hammering down to form the peen. Be patient and use steady light taps, being very careful not to strike off to the side or you could knock things out of alignment. Be patient with the steady taps, and don't resort to more force. A hot peen on the other hand, has the pommel wedged right onto the tang and the end of that tang is then heated and peened before the grip is put into place (otherwise the grip would be scorched by the heat). This is the most long-lasting solution, but I don't know how you would fix it if it comes loose. Unlike a cold peen, a hot peen uses the hard metal of the blade's tang. I doubt you'd be able to re-peen that without applying heat to soften it. Perhaps somebody with more knowledge than I in European sword assembly could offer a better solution. *EDIT: I just looked at the photos of the Hanwei Hand-and-a-Half sword on Kult of Athena... and to me it looks like a hot peen, in the shape of the tang. Perhaps somebody with more experience would be able to tell. Is this what your sword looks like...?

No matter if it's hot peened or cold peened, take some careful whacks at the peen and see if that tightens things up. If not, there's the fishing line fix.

yea thats my sword alright!
i'll try the hammer and see if its better. can a regular nail hammer work as well or is that too much weight/force?
what is the fishing line fix btw?

a round head peen hammer makes the metal spread out rather than be driven down so it's best.
Fishing line fix would be tieing the end of some fishing line right under the guard between it and the grip, or same thing at the grip/pommel, then wrapping that line around and around until it fills in the small gap and jams itself in the gap- tightening the hilt up. Floss works too.
