So I got a new sword from Sinosword. I have yet to get good enough pictures of it to post. But here's the general statistics:
It's a folded 1095 high carbon steel blade, 31 inches long with a nice thick clam shell blade profile. Differentially hardened.
I'm quite pleased with it, but as this is my first time owning a sword there are many uncertainties.
First of all, I noticed a bunch of small scratches on various parts of the blade that were revealed after wiping off the first layer of oil. Is this normal with new swords? I asked the manufacturer and they told me it's normal for the blade face to be scratched by the wood of the scabbard and that Ebony (the wood my sheath is made of) is especially hard and prone to scratching blades.
I looked online and found a bunch of tips about scratch removal. The SBG maintenance section suggests Metal Glo, but at other places I read that Metal Glo tends to be too abrasive.
Anyone know how I can polish the scratches out? Anyone used Metal Glo before? Should I use it? If so, how do I go about it? Just paste, cloth, and wipe? The scratches aren't deep at all or anything that can be considered damage to the blade. Just these little blemishes that are really ugly on the face of an otherwise beautiful sword.
Any help from veterans would be appreciated. Please keep in mind that I'm a complete newb to swords and anything methods involving high skill or special equipment or high risk of actually damaging the steel is probably not a good thing for me to try.
On a side note, can someone give me more detail about maintaining the blade and scabbard, specifically what oils to use, frequency, etc..
Thanks!
