Hey guys I'm looking through all the tactical combat knives, both production and custom and just getting saturated in notions of what I want custom stuff has wait times and productions always have something you dont like (nylon sheath when kydex is much more apt or serrations when plain edge more apt). So I'm looking for peoples impressions on good combat knives in about this range of characteristics; Budget: No more than $300.00US Type: Fixed Blade Handle: G-10 or Micarta Blade Length: 5" to 7 " Blade Profile: Spear Point (either sharpened or blunt false edge). Blade Finish: Preferably Coated (Teflon, Gun Kote etc) but not a must. Blade Edge: Plain (I've had serrations and see little point). Steel Type: A Proven Metal but its a defence knife not survival so at least AUS8 or generally better. Sheath: Kydex (with or is compatible with Tec-Lok Belt/MOLLE systems). So what would you guys reccomend around that field. I'm looking more production but if you guys know any custom makers who have made tactical knives that similarly fit this bill in the past I'm open to that. But I'm leaning more to "general" production. Any thoughts, any info would be hugely appreciated. So what would any of you guys reccomend that fits that bill ?. I know its picky but having a hard t

As usual when topics like this arise, the first thing to my mind is Cold Steel's OSS. I'm no fan of Cold Steel and don't like suggesting their products, but the OSS is pretty much the one exception. I just really like the style. Granted, one could find much the same elsewhere, likely at least par and probably better in quality, but the price is going to be much higher.
Possible turnoffs - It's a sub-hilt design (limited grip options) and fully double-edge, which may not be legal in your area (dagger laws and all)
Otherwise uh...well, shoot, can't go wrong with a classic Kabar...or anything by Ontario Knife Co., either, from what I've heard of them. There are countless options, really, and most fit the conditions you offer. They're just very different knives from one another...so a slightly better idea of what you're after, as always, is handy.

One blade I love is my Blackhawk Tatang but the two short coming I had with it are its to big for me (I got Medium hands) and I'm a little more into kydex/plastic sheaths (it has a ballistic Nylon sheath which is the best nylon sheath I've had to date). Blackhawk have brought out a new blade the Gideon, its in both drop and tanto point. I'm thinking about the drop point. www.bladehq.com/item--Blackhawk- ... xed--12261 www.bladehq.com/item--Blackhawk- ... ade--12260 Might be a nice defence knife and AUS8 is fine seen as thought its just gonna stay pretty in its sheath until the worst. Might save up for a custom one time. I just wonder how the heat treat is on it.

That's an interesting knife. I rather like the shape of the drop point, that tanto has a bit too much going on for my tastes. Too busy, too many corners or something.
Seems a fair price, I seem to recall hearing good things of Blackhawk knives...I imagine these are no exception.

You might also check this gentleman out. He's local for me, so I had the pleasure of actually going to his shop to pick up my latest knife. I'll be taking some pics here pretty soon, but suffice to say that this thing is fantastic in nearly every single way. He makes some pretty cool tactical models with the stats you're looking for as well as a few more traditional belt knives. Peek through his past/available gallery to get a feel for what I mean. Edit: Helps when I put in the name/link, huh? www.facebook.com/BRTBladeworksP.S. You don't have to have a FB account to view his page, thankfully.

Not sure how set you were on a plain edge, but I like SOG , I have the seal team 2000 and it's been a great knife. This listing has it with a nylon sheath but i've seen it with kydex. www.knifeoutlet.com/shop/10Expan ... Code=SOG37
