Can anyone tell me the best (easiest) way to fix play in a habaki? Mine moves up and down (laterally...?) only a millimeter or so but it does catch on the saya lip and i don't want to rip that all up. Do i need a new one, is that the best answer or will i just have to buy several and hope one fits perfect? Thanx in advance!

I would shim it. You could make a shim out of a short piece of 12 or 14 guage copper wire hammered flat and cut to length. It could be soldered, epoxied or jb welded in after a few fittings to get it perfect. You could even mix some jb weld and stick it up in the habaki until cured then needle file to fit. Shouldn't be too hard without having to replace it.

Sadly not all habaki are fitted properly. Really you want a good fitted habaki with no movement, all other parts of the sword rely on the habaki. That is a good fix that will work. Unless your sword is over the $300 mark it is not really worth getting a custom habaki fitted to your sword. Though there are places that will do it like Fred Lohman's www.japanese-swords.com/pages/habaki.htm but this service costs $250 to $350 which is why I only suggest it for swords over $300. Buying a replacement habaki would be hit and miss, they really need to be made specifically for each sword and fitted for that particular blade. So as you suspected you would have to buy a bunch most likely to find one that fit the best. You would be better off with one of the fixes described by S. Price.

Thanx for the replies, it is always a bit reassuring just hearing from others.
