Anyone know where I can take my swords for sharpening in the lower mainland BC, Canada? I did a google search but all I can see is knife sharpening services.

Yep. You can contact Michael Blecich in Surrey at: twoknifeguysinbc@gmail.com! . He lives near the Guildford Mall. Does good polish work, haven't actually had him sharpen anything yet, but SeanF has.

sword sharpening or polishing can be done by yourself if your interested to. and make sure that you are using the best type of sharpener in order not to damage or deform your stuff.

A good way to sharpen is to use a file for rough sharpening and a stone the smooth it out I find. I have never tried a belt sander as I have no idea how well my apartment neighbors would feel about that.

Unit731,
When using a file, do you direct the file away from the edge, or towards it?
I'm just getting into hand sharpening, but I am far from being good at it.

Towards it, in a diagonal direction.

The little 1x30 belt sander that everyone makes such good use of, isn't really very loud. It's not as loud as someone using hedge trimmers, or an electric string trimmer. The majority of the time you are using a slack belt and it doesn't transmit much vibration through the grinder giving you the typical GRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAWWWWWWRRRRRRR grinder noise. Assuming that you have an area where you could set it up, it shouldn't annoy the neighbors if they are reasonable folks and you don't sharpen your weapons at 0300 on a workday!
