I am interested in buying a civil war era sword, and I've basically narrowed it down to two Windlass sabers. 1)1860 Light Cavalry Union Saber: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... nion+Saber 2)1860 Union Cavalry Officer Saber: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... icer+Saber I was wondering if anyone knows: Which is a better cutter? Which is more sturdy? Which has better handling? Which one is more functional overall? Or if anyone owns one of these swords, any comments about it (good or bad) would be very appreciated!

Hi. Welcome to the board viewtopic.php?f=6&t=871An old review of the 1840/1860 system of swords you may find useful. Prior to buying original historic pieces I owned both of these and the M1840. I still have the officer saber. The basic M1860 enlisted saber is a great bargain that you can get sharpened and deliverd to you for less than $120.00 The officer is maybe $30 more because you pay for the more elaborate hilt and etched blade. If you intend to cut might as well get the enlisted as it has a little more blade bias and you needn't worry about messing up the etching. The officer blade handles a bit better and is a lot prettier. Quality and long term sturdiness of the hilt is questionable. Wood cores on these aren't particularly strong. Historically the tangs on these sabers were prone to overstressing the hilt under hard usage. I'd buy either of these without too much concern. Will note that both are currently out of stock at KoA. Cheers
