Hello all,
I'm new here, and so this has probably been asked before - sorry. I've made myself a few toys in the past from mild steel (a gladius) and stainless steel (a Khyber knife), so I know a little about swords. I would really like to learn to forge a proper, useable sword but I don't have the time or the resources, so I'm looking at buying a functional bastard/hand-and-a-half medieval sword.
I live in the UK so my choices for retailers are fairly limited. My budget is around £200. So far the only proper retailer I've found in Britain is The Knight Shop - if anyone can suggest an alternative I'll check it out, or if anyone's had a bad experience with them, I'd like to know.
So far my research, and the fact that I'm constrained to a rather small number of models, has lead me to believe that one of these swords may be the best, but I wondered if anyone had any advice.
Windlass Baron's Sword
www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/ ... -1776.html
Windlass Oakeshott Type XIIA
www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/ ... -1302.html
From what I've read brass fittings can be suboptimal on functional swords, though.
Hanwei Albrecht II Hand-and-a-half Sword
www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/ ... p-588.html
This one got a very positive review here (www.sword-buyers-guide.com/albrecht.html). I'd need to confirm with the retailer that this one is actually the Hanwei one, because it isn't listed as such although the photo shows a very similar sword, and also confirm that this wasn't furnished in brass (unless I'm advised that brass is OK)
There's also a Tinker bastard sword (www.theknightshop.co.uk/catalog/ ... -1965.html) but the aesthetics of it appeal to me much less than the others.
Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts to offer about any of those swords or can suggest an alternative then I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks for your help.
