Hey folks, I just wanted to toss a quick thread out there to say hello and introduce myself as a new member here on the forum. Been lurking for awhile, most specifically for the reviews, and finally got around to actually signing up. My name's Andy and I live on the prairies of Canada, in Calgary, Alberta. I've been knife/tomahawk throwing for awhile, as well as involved in archery for the last few years (trad & compound) and recently gotten into some whip work. For a couple years I studied Fiore Italian longsword, though always with blunts (thank goodness!) and never having owned a sharp, quality sword. Now that I've recently settled into a new place that allows me the ability to pursue this a bit more aggressively (basement, yards etc...) I'm psyched to get more into it. Built my first cutting stand today from plans on this forum, though I'm probably being a bit generous calling it a cutting stand as it's still pretty crude and rough. Hope to try my hand at cutting with a couple axes I have, as well as a CS short Assegai spear, while I figure out what'll be my first sword purchase. Look forward to learning lots and hopefully tossing my own $0.02 in here and there.

Appreciate the warm welcome, everyone!
Average_joe101, I definitely recommend checking out the Calgary Stampede if you ever have the chance. May be a bit of cliched suggestion, though it's hard to argue with lots of parties, rodeos and chuckwagon races, free breakfasts, a huge midway/carnival and cowboy gear for a solid couple weeks.

Hey, welcome from another new Canuck! I'm next door in BC. I have family in Calgary and Killam, as well as near Peace River. Lived in Grande Prairie for 8 years.
Might I suggest a Katana for your first real sword? Especially if you plan on cutting on a cutting stand. Nothing cuts like a good Katana.
I love the rapiers too, I used to do some SCA rapier fighting, and I think I will get a real live steel one sometime. But it will have to wait till I land the Katana I want.

Cool to see a few more canucks on this board so I don't feel too outnumbered. ;-) I actually just moved to Calgary not long ago from the west coast to pursue a job I was offered. Was in Victoria for a couple years and Vancouver for a couple more. Caldazar, thanks very much for the advice. I haven't looked at katanas much, nor have any idea what to look for in respect to quality, craftsmanship etc... What I have been pondering between are the following two: www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=2170www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=4911

Yep. TomK is one of the authorities on sharpening around here. It does take a great deal of practice and careful application, though. It's pretty easy to negatively affect the geometry or ruin the lines of a blade, so I'd suggest you start with a very cheap throwaway blade and practice with that.

Welcome to the forum. My Dad and Grandma had distant relatives in BC, a fairly short drive north from Seattle, but that was when I was a boy. They've probably spread out since then. --Lee
