My best friend is getting ready to graduate, after which I'll rarely be able to see him again as he'll be in china for quite a while then grad school. I was thinking about buying him a Musashi Kunshi Katana, www.musashiswords.com/shop/produ ... =34&page=1 But I want to make sure its actually quality (lasts, is more than just a wall hanger), and no one had better suggestions. Any feedback helps. My budget is under 200 bucks, I'm a student myself.... Thanks

Two things - maybe 3.
ONE - Welcome to the forum. It's a great place to get questions like yours answered
TWO - your friend is lucky to have you as a friend
THREE - you have picked a decent choice for him although it looks like it may be out of stock....I saw something about contacting them BEFORE ordering. You may find something close to that for the same money. Your choice is good looking, IMO.
and....one last thing to consider. When your friend graduates and goes to China....can this person take their new sword gift with them? You might want to check on weapons transportation into China. I personally don't know but it would be something I would investigate.
good luck!
Steve

I just received my Musashi 1060 Katana and am mightily impressed. It does, unfortunately, look as if the one you've chosen may be out of stock, but good luck!

That is a decent Musashi, though it seems out of stock at the moment (like others have noted) so you will probably need to look other places. You can check Trueswords or Kult of Athena who both sell Musashi usually at a bit less than the Musashi website. Sword N Armory also sells Musashi and has free shipping for the ones over $125. Though Musashi is not the only decent company out there. Hau Wei has been getting a lot of good reviews here. While ebay can be sketchy they are one of the few ebay vendors who have proven decent. www.ebay.com/sch/huawei-sword/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686 They have some very nice swords under the $200 range don't forget to calculate in shipping costs, around $38 from China. You need to be able to be a little more patient for shipping from China, which can take a bit longer than normal US shipping. If your not getting a custom blade from Hau Wei then it should ship out fairly quick and is just a little longer than normal US shipping. I am sure others will chime in with other suggestions. There are a lot of sub $200 katana out there that can work for you.

It is out of stock! That must have happened over the weekend... looks like he might be getting the blue one then.
Also his move to china is for about a year, so he can stash it with his family for a bit.
I'll definitely check out those Hau Wei blades too, as well as any other suggestions that arise.
Thanks for the feedback so far guys!

Musashi is a very decent company and one of the katana makers who changed the game in the sword world. They started putting out affordable katana that were functional that blew away katana more than double the Musashi line prices. The $50 line of Musashi were originally better than their own $70 line. A couple years ago Musashi actually pulled their $70 line until they could find a better forge who could make a $70 line better than their $50 line. LOL. They did finally get a new $70 line.
So yes Musashi is a pretty safe bet for katana not being a wall hanger. They are a great functional katana company who helped change the sword world as we know it.
As I mentioned in my previous post, there are other good companies that are worth checking out. I would suggest wandering through the review section here, see what others are saying about various katana makers.

I know there's been at least one good thread here about taking/traveling swords in/out of China and a couple of our members who are actually in China confirmed their laws are very strict on the subject, regardless of where the blades were made... In fact, if I remember correctly, it's easier to get a historic foreign-made blade into China than it is to bring a modern Chinese-made blade back in from the outside. Strange huh?

All, thank you for you input, I found it very helpful. Ineffable, you had me second guessing myself with huawei. This is the sword I ended up going with. I'm happy about it because the Tsuba moulding goes better with his personality. www.musashiswords.com/shop/produ ... 7bd33dd731 Again, thank you.

Well as I pointed out Musashi has a great reputation so I wasn't knocking it. If the first one you were looking at hadn't been out of stock I probably would not have even mentioned Huawei. I just figured offering you some options since the one you had looked at wasn't in stock anymore. I wasn't trying to get you second guessing yourself Maybe you should get a Hauwei for yourself after your friend leaves

They're nice katana for the money. Better could be had but at that price point its hard to beat.
Both the red and blue versions are out of stock at musashiswords.com but I'm sure they can be found if one looked in the right places.
