The manual we have for Polish saber is form 1830 and we are trying to fill in the gaps with some what similar looking Napoleonic Era sources. It is a latter guard than goes with the blade but it is a trade off of period look and protection. Richard ended up going with a more complex guard to limit injuries relating to the volume of sparring we doing but still have a guard that doesn't get in the way of the historical technique.
We are planning on armoring up like we do for steel longsword.

They are in. I went over to my instructors place last night to check them out. they look good and feel good in the hand. We did some slow drills and the blades are starting to take small scuffs. We will do some free play Saturday and get some video. I hope they hold up to sparring.

Here is our first attempt using the steel sabers. The blades held up well with only minor scuffing. The guard got a little loose but that will be snugged up with leather washers. Both of the swords where around $500 each shipped. This is the guy that made them. www.miecz-sword.com/about.html***edit for corrected price

A little correction the Sabers are $500. The blades are beautiful, but a little to costly. To outfit a club. We are looking for a cheaper solution. so If you find something send me a link and I would be much obliged.

We have 2 sets of aluminium sabers made by Hollywood Combat Center, by Dave Baker they run $250 to $350 each depending on options and style. The blades are replaceable Shell guard in the middle some demo play fighting sparring historical ring guard We will have to be careful since our hands will be more vulnerable. John, how did the Szanek blades hold up, and were you guys overall satisfied with them? Was the switch to Baker's blades a cost issue alone, or nearness, or quickness of turnaround?
I'm really enjoying you guys' videos.

The steel blades feel incredible but they don't hold up to sparring and chip up and get sharp quick.
The Bakers are very durable and affordable and the blades are replaceable.

Don't want to hijack the topic, but felt that this could be the right place to post this question- I have been interested in polish sabers(and all things curved and sharp) since some time, and had recently contacted lightswords and Mr.Berbekucz about their wares. Anyone with any experience here about the same apart from the 2 reviews already posted? Furthermore, I was also informed that there may be issues with shipping a sharp sword to the USA,and is this something which is commonly encountered?

Great! And you feel that the handling is historically accurate and the finish as good as you desired?

I fight with a blunt single hander by Berbekucz and I'm very satisfied. And I handled his hussar saber, both blunt and sharp version. They are nice sabers...

Well, I didn't handle a lot of his swords, but the blunts I handled are very well balanced compared to most other blunts I have handled. I was most impressed with the heat treating. The edge is extremely durable and very safe since it's 3mm thick. The sharp hussar saber I handled was rather light agile but with a PoB a bit more down the blade. But that is accurate for such a saber, I believe... Some of his blunts have a bit too big pommels and while that brings the PoB close to the guard, sword might handle better with lower overall weight and a PoB a bit more down the blade. But generally his swords are great for the price. And he does nice pattern welding, I would love to get a pattern welded viking or migration era blade by him...

Do people have trouble shipping sharp swords to the USA? What services do they usually use from Europe as a courier?
