I am looking into buying either the Generation 2 Black prince, not the new one but the one Paul gave 5 stars here on SBG, or the VA Practical Long Sword. I want a sword that is tough, but at the same time light. I was reading here on SBG, and paul was saying that the Black Prince is ossibly the "ultimate battle ready medieval sword" which had me lean more towards the black prince. Then again, he said the VA Long Sword was pretty much the best long sword on the market under 300$. Which one should i invest in?
Thanks guys!

I have the Gen2 Black Prince (old model) and it was a good buy for the price. It is not a light sword though. I used to have the VA Longsword but did not keep it very long as it was too light and flexy for my tastes. Both are good swords.

Another factor is, the VA Practical will take a few months for you to get, as they're on backorder/in production. The Gen2 you can get right away... unless someone beats you to it Wait a minute... you're the same person selling the Black Prince... I'm confused...

Most of the VA swords are not in stock anyplace right now, they're in the middle of a production run, so it will be quite some time before any of them are available. If you sell your BP you will be swordless for some time, but if you've got your heart set on a VA then it may be worthwhile. Personally I love the VA Signature swords, but I can't swing the cash at the moment for them. Really it sounds like all of them are pretty equivalent quality-wise, it's the aesthetics and stats on the various models that will be different. Also, honesty is generally the best way to go... otherwise you just confuse and/or annoy people who would otherwise be willing to help

I have the Black Prince (the model Paul reviewed) and to be honest I am not a fan. If I had to do it over again I would not have bought it.
My thoughts and feelings: The grip is too thick. The furniture is way too bulky and sloppy in places. Too much weight is in your hand, seemingly in order to move the POB back a bit to about 4.5 inches from the guard. That is not the best way to balance a sword, in my opinion. It makes the sword feel heavier than it really is and dead in hand. In no way is it a light and agile sword. To me, it is the polar opposite: heavy and awkward. It is not a horrible sword, but it is painfully overbuilt. There are better choices out there in that price range.
Also keep in mind as a function of it's form, the Black Prince is more of a thruster than a cutter. So if cutting is your intention you would be better served looking at another style of blade.
I have never handled a VA Longsword so I cannot speak on it. I have heard so many conflicting reviews on the blade's weight and flexibility that I wouldn't know what to think about it.
Please keep in mind, any advice you get here is very subjective. One person's "too heavy" is another person's "just right". No one can really tell you what's better for YOU.

The one listed on KOA, under Gen 2's new name Legacy Arms, looks completely different from the old model. Does anyone have it?
I don't know if much has changed, but in profile at least the proportions are closer to the original than the old model.

I can't speak to the black prince but I have the VA practical longsword, the signature Kreigschwert, the signature Malatesta and the signature Knights Templar. All of the VA swords are very well made, nimble and light. They are scary sharp right out of the box and have nice wood cored leather scabbards and suspensions systems. It's hard to find a better complete package for the price. The main downside is the wait time. Best bet is to give Sonny a call and see what he has in stock or will be getting soon. I believe he has some Savoys in stock and possibly a Knights Templar or two. He will also do custom leather work on your grip and scabbard as well as engravings on the blade for a reasonable price if you want to give your sword a bit more of a personal touch.

I bought the VA Longsword as my first sword.
It is still a part of my preferred cutter group. It is one of the sword that I will never get rid of... Well, that's not true. I would sell it before I sold my Atrim XII.1H, and then I'd be a homeless bum with a sword strapped to his hip.
