k, wait..,, so what do I do? Do I type SGB review into the computer and then ask people here what they found when they searched the Google? I don't get it?

So far it looks like no takers to this challenge. I do agree it would be an interesting thing to see. I too have noticed this ask questions then argue with the answers trend, I even commented about it on a thread, suggesting that the person try a different method that was less antagonistic. I agree that a lot of folks here can look at a sword online, provided it has specs and pictures and be able to judge fairly well if it is worth the price. The SBG community has quite a nice amount of knowledgeable folks who I have learned to trust. There are plenty of swords I know aren't my cup of tea but are still decent swords and worth the price asked for them. I have recommended swords to noobs that I have not owned nor would ever want to since they were not my personal taste based upon these valued and trusted opinions. I was able to do so not just because I knew I could trust their opinion but also because I know a bit about what makes a decent sword. With the two in combo I have full faith I can recommend a sword I have never owned or used in person. The same works for swords not worth consideration. Who knows, maybe SBG was promoted on an asperger's syndrome site, and now we are getting a bunch of people here who don't know how to communicate well? I don't know, but I do like this challenge idea.

Hey now, play nice. I happen to have Aspergers and I know of at least 2 other members that do. Yes, it may make communication interesting at times but it doesn't make me an idiot; actually a common linkage with aspergers is unusually high IQs.
What some of the newer members do not seem to understand that if someone has bought dozens of katanas all across the price spectrum, generally it is easy to tell whether or not something is worth buying based on the pictures and sellers description. Its not hard, most of the sellers make the same basic (I don't want to say deliberate misstatements) fishy claims regarding the swords.
I don't need to have someone tell me not to take a $3 bill. I have enough sense to know they don't exist. Same principal with a lot of these sellers.

Ive got an idea, maybe we should all put in $15, choose one (ryansword) as a group and buy it. Let someone review it. Then raffle it off in the site so someone can win it (if they want)? Off topic for a sec (yes its OFF topic) my brother in law has Aspergers. He is very, very smart. His passion is WW2 he is like a walking encyclopedia knowing dates and names and everything off the top off his head. If there a forumites here with Aspergers and their passion is swords i would listen to them very carefully as i would bet almost anything they know more than people like me (just an average joe). My advice, listen to what people say. You might learn something Dont be so close minded (not directing this at anyone in general as i have not read all the posts)

My aspergers has resulted in me being a walking storehouse of random and generally useless information (unless I ever went on a quiz show) and very detailed and specific knowledge of swords, armor, paintball guns, science fiction literature, ancient history and several other esoteric areas. What we might lack in social graces and in basic communication skills is generally balanced out by hyper specific knowledge in our areas of interest.

I will share my two cents here. This is my personnal opinion, nothing less, nothing more, take it as such. We did have a couple of new members who asked questions that rubbed many of us the wrong way. I will say a bit more on that later... But, I think we also had a lot more new members that haven't and who are doing just fine on this forum. Although I agree some people can bring the wrong kind of attitude for an open forum like this, I think we should avoid viewing these people as the standard-bearer of an entire generation/group. As to questions that rub us the wrong way... I try to take some time before judging these and those who ask them. Occasionnaly, I believe, the questions is simply blurted by a newcomer that doesn't have the experience or the knowledge of the forum to know better. The member trust this forum's members, but didn't do much research to know, for example, that Haz' is a charged, sensitive subject around here. In the end, I think these discussions can be great reminders of the knowledge and history this forum has (has, Haz... no pun intended...). On a sinde-note, if we would be constantly, always asking newcomers to ''read that, go there, come when you will know better'', I think this place would ge very boring, very fast ... As to another kind of irritating questions... Those asked by people look for one answer. We see these too. Newcomer ask a question but clearly seem to be looking for one, specific answer, and gets pissed when he/she doesn't get it. On that subject, I can't help but agree with most of what 14ThForsaken and Student said in the last two pages. When I see that kind of attitude, I can't help but feel insulted, too. In the end, I suggest we all try to take questions and people on a case-by-case basis. Not all questions are asked looking for one answer. Not all questions who seemed asked with ill-intent are made to stir up sh*t. I hope this made sens to all of ya'

It makes sense Sebastien. I think I'm suffering a bit of burn out from some of the same questions that get asked over and over again. I've always tried to stay out of certain threads because I feel they are going to start going downhill. Unfortunately I didn't see how far downhill these couple of threads were going to go until I posted in them.
We have several new members that are polite, gracious and bring a great new enthusiasm into the boards. Sadly they get overlooked at times due to a few bad apples.
One thing I always try to do is hit the preview button before I submit something to make sure that it is what I want to say and won't unintentionally rub someone the wrong way. Not saying there aren't times when I have for one reason or another. But in general, I think it would really help reduce these type of threads if people read through what they wrote before posting it and tried to see how other people might take it. Just my $.02,take it for what it is or isn't worth.

I have not overlooked the enthusiastic new members! They seem like a fun challenge to try and draw out of them what they want! Getting them to somewhat question what they have already learned, what they dont know and to be open to different ideas in the process.
I am definitely down for 20 bux (few extra to help offset the OP's shipping cost), if you send them to me, they wont be auction worthy at the end. Of course some real good pictures of the asiasword/ryansword/haz offerings would be nice.

How much do they cost to begin with? I would pay $20 for a good destruction vid to see just how good/bad they are. But i mean a GOOD destruction test, i would wanna see it attempt EVERYTHING someone in a battle/war/zombie apocalypse/backyard beater 'hey look this looks fun to chop' would try to cut (i use the word 'chop' literally).

That would not be me. I made it a point to make a predictable/comparable/repeatable test. Boring and bland, sure. A test I can do now or 10 years from now and have similar results that can be viewed side by side and mean something, sure. A test that can be repeated on different swords with results that can be compared. I highly doubt either the Hanwei or the other sword would survive long enough to just take out random stuff with.

Many moons ago, when I first discovered the new production sword market , I made a legitimate mistake and bought a katana from a seller called katana1980 on ebay. You see it was 2005 , and I had once trained a decade before ... (90-95) and there was NO production sword market . I was excited by production katana , and dove in with a will. The first sword i bought was the one by katana1980 ... the same seller as dgspirit , the same as badtrack, the same as Ryan. i bought this sword : www.ryansword.com/104cm-handmade ... -p-17.html It was horrible ... so horrible they sent me two replacements... both of which were jacked up as well. I have since bought many swords from many , many brands ... Musashi, Masahiro and a PK. The sword from Ryan/katana1980 /badtrack is the worst I've ever seen, and remains so... I have it still , in a much altered state ... it bent with the first cut... well club not cut... the edge was lousy . It fell apart just as fast. The "Masahiro Bamboo" (really a Jin-Long ) i bought the same year remains a viable sword yet the Ryan didnt make it a day. My 2 cents

I wholeheartedly agree. There are some things that a sword just SHOULDN'T be made to do. I'd want the tests held to the constraints of what a martial artist would do with a sword and then stray outside that enough to really test the sword but a true destruction test simply results in the destruction of the swords. While entertaining as it may be that is not the point of this challenge.
Now if YOU wanted to put the money into doing something like that on your own please by all means do so. I'm sure you'll get a lot of ravings about your test and it'll certainly be entertaining.

You do realize I was talking about a destructive test? The only way to truly estimate a limit is to go beyond the limit in as small of steps as you can, in the most repeatable fashion you can.

Yes but I was trying to make the distinction between the type of test you were proposing vs. just hacking away at anything and everything till a sword broke.
I mean anybody can go about haphazardly hacking away at trees, steel poles and cinder blocks. If I'm going to put up my personal property for this though I want a slow, boring and thorough test.. as you said, as many small steps as you can take, so that the testing can be quantifiable and trackable.
I don't want a test where all one can say is, "Well I swung at a tree and that was ok. So after that I took a swing at the metal laundry pole in my back yard and the sword took a set. The other sword broke when I cut through a broom stick then decided to split some wood with it." In a situation like that there's no real comparison nor is anything really quantifiable or trackable.

One of the newbies here. Hi my name is Mike and I am a Sword O' Holic (really a shiny O'Holic). I am willing to drop 15 or 20 in the bucket to help this cause. Watching those Ryansword videos and all that awesome shiny stuff on his website really is like bait on a fishing line. Gotta really be careful what you take a bite out of or you may become the meal that gets taken.

Well Ive had no reply, didnt expect to.I havent much followed this thread lately.Basically I told ryansword I would test and review,no destruction testing mess.Mats, bamboo, dowel, what would be expected from a quality sword.Still no reply from Ryansword.I have enough of my own kats to make comparisons. No ppk tho.

lets create a separate thread with a poll for everyone whos willing to throw in the Pot for a sword to be tested/compared/destructive tested so we dont clutter up this thread and its original Challenge. Id also be in to see a piece of ryan steel pushed to and beyond its limit, owning 3 of them, id like to see what exactly it can take.

in one of their ads, between custom options and payment. they list; ryan-swords, tckruan88, tommy_lee85, lee-sword and ryan-sword88 with "You can visit the other stores of us to buy the same high quality items and enjoy the same excellent service, they are all from Ryans!" .... to me that makes the numerous ebay account tom-foolery mute if they are all interlinked.
i saw the wrap started on the wrong side on one of the swords. Overall ryan swords dont look too bad to me, though a bit expensive when compared to other offereings such as hanwei and musashi. double the price to pick you own fittings and get a crappier wrap. value for the money would be directly related to how much value on places on the fittings. I am half tempted to order on just for the #118 tsuba lol. honestly, its the haz and asaiswords that i want to know about.
Now I am curious .... is ryansword & asiasword connected other than appearance & quality of product? I have yet to see anything regarding ryansword. Haz & asiasword have already irked me with how they approached things.

Looks like Tommysword offers free shipping in the US. Does Ryansword? I wonder if this is one of those envelop stuffer deals. You sign up to be a seller (stuffer) they set you up a website and you just take the orders. Forward the order to the main and they assemble and ship the item. What we need to do is find out about the forge.
