Hey, raf2, how's that CRKT treating you. I got one of those for a friend that is in the Service and I heard the big handle and flipper were good with the kevlar gloves. Nice knife by the way.
Groothewanderer....do you hunt pigs or butcher?

Used to hunt them with dogs, as well as trap them. We would be in areas where fire arms are not practical, so we tied them up, and dispatched them with knives. No more pigs for me though, I live in Colorado now.

Knife works well with gloves for sure! I travel to Army bases and that is packed in my checked luggage then into my pocket of my tac pants.... The Veff serrations though are to easy to knock the tips off of though. I had to trim some plastic like a credit card thickness and it knock the tips right off. CRKT said they would replace it with a regular serrated knife.

Here are my two go to knives. The Hoodlum is more useful then it gets credit for. It is a large knife that acts like a small one in my hand. I have even found a use for the notch, that has enabled me to use it for skinning animals as small as squirrels. As a fighter it could be devastating, but its just not practical as I am not likely to have it readily accessible at all times. The ESEE 3 on the other hand is with me at all times. Its flat, and light, but not to light, and razor sharp. I feel I would do fine if I had to use the three in a fight.

I like the Blackhawk Tatang. Made in Taiwan but who cares. Nice shape and size for a combat knife. 1085 carbon. Attachments:

Bowie--at least 9" blade
A Bagwell Helle's Belle (11"-12") or a Randall-Thorpe (13" blade) either one would be my ultimate

I'd love to have an original, simply for old school cool. My mom worked for a guy who was in the Brigade, he shared some of his stories with me before he passed away about ten years ago.

Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife. Perfect cut and thrust, not too heavy or too thick. 100% designed for CQC. It's hard to find originals and few bootnecks will ever sell theirs, but this one is a true and excellent replica: www.macdonaldarms.com/armoury/FairbairnSykes.php

Some details a little down the page but no particulars. What I do know is that it works. Steel is good and edges are robust.

Says right on the page there, EN45 is good stuff, and I'm sure these fellows know how to treat it. With their cheapest model being £190, I'd hope so, at least. I've still got my Sheffield-made model, forget where I bought it, but it was described as being made by the same company bearing the official government contract for current issue versions. It was a bear to put an edge on, but it's otherwise quality. Shouldn't have gone for the parkerized black finish, though. Been wanting a V42 for years; I assume this is the knife that's been previously referred to as the V 2 and/or "Devil's Brigade" knife; it's the only one coming up in Google. Boker and Hanwei have two replicas for about $100 each, the Boker being a bit nicer looking. I'm also fond of their M3 replica. I'm sure I've said all this before in a much earlier post, but since it's come up again, yeah, that. I wonder how many knock-off "antiques" one might find on the 'bay these days...but last time I tried trustworthy sources, they were tough to come across in decent condition and quite pricey.

I have the old school plain model and I don't like black finishes on blades. They don't last and soon become a reflective eyesore, making the coating pointless. If you want to black up a weapon; it's much better to use fullers earth or even cam cream. Easy to do, is non-reflective and above all else is temporary, so you can properly maintain it.
The FS came before the V2 (with the latter based in the former) but they're practically the same thing.

honestly its hard to answer your question without more details about what exactly are you faceing? are we talking about a knife fight in the streets of a city or out of the normal circumstances or as a soulder soldier in afghanistan. the thing i am saying is the environment makes a world of difference in what equipment would be best suited to your situation. in my opinion the best knife for a given situation is the same thing that your opponent is using because they know their environment better than you probably do.

Whatever you want to consider. I''m just curious which knife people would choose, and why. I didn't really have a specific scenario in mind.

Best all rounder? The CRKT Shinbu. Either that of the Hissatsu fixed blade (same thing pretty much just a bit cheaper) I carry a few for different purposes. The Shinbu is my favourite. Its small enough to carry yet big enough presence to ward off attackers if need be. Around town, going shopping etc i carry the CRKT Hisho. As its also a top EDC blade but with defense potential if needed. Going on small hunting trips out bush i take the Blackjack Tac Ops. Its a great hunting and combat tool.
