I have recently inherited a kukri and scabbard. They are about 60 years old. The blade had a fair amount of rust which I removed with WD 40. There are also extensive black patches on the blade. What are they due to? Is it possible to restore the blade to it former shiny state? The scabbard (leather) too needs help but I hope to get to that later. I am a novice, so may not have a good understanding of technical terms. Thanks in advance. I have photos but do not know if the uploading worked. Attachments:

Depends on what you really want to do with it. If it were me and inherited from family with history of its use.....then I'd hold off on doing anything more than what you've done. The patina (use history) took 60 years to get there. Save it. Red 'active' rust is the enemy... the black rust staining should be fairly stable. I would only oil the blade and use some saddle wax or similar leather product on the scabbard and handle. Enjoy!

Thanks. Makes sense, though I never thought of it that way.
