Hey guys, I've recently been into swords so I've been looking them up and teaching myself. I've also had a chance to try some out myself, and so now I'm looking to get my own(going with the SBG custom katana).
So, I'm also a fan of history, and I believe in keeping within the traditions as a sign of respect.
So I was just thinking. I prefer a bo-hi, but was it historical/traditional? I'm guessing it was a yes, but I just wanna make sure.
Now for the answer I really can't find for some reason, is the colors of the ito and saya. Where there any restrictions in color, and did color have a meaning?
How did samurai pick their color? What is clan based?
Thanks.

Ito color rankings has several opinions. One school of thought was it was clan based others say rank based. And still others say no color rankings at all. There is a color ranking chart somewhere on here and elsewhere on the web that discloses the details.
I'm going to give an opinion and a guess. White was used for special swords like shrine swords or Shogun or high ranking lords. At the other end black was most common. Then brown, blue, green, and gold up towards white. Indigo or Navy blue was supposedly the most traditional common samurai sword handle wrap color.
That said ....pick what YOU like.

I like tradition Well, glad to hear that there was a large array of colors used. Certainly makes it easier  Still, I would like to understand how colors were chosen, to maybe inspire/help me do the same. There are lots of great color combinations, I want some meaning, hence history is my guide.

my non-historic non-traditional has me trying to pick colors on the theme of the fittings if possible. Shiny white just dont conjur up a tree image, but browns and greens do. but white with a white bird or flowers fits. hi are traditional.

Thanks, so I feel good about the bo-hi now. No nagging voice in my head Now if only I could decide on a color scheme........hmm. How does a white saya look? I was thinking of a blue and white theme. Or maybe black and blue, or green and black....yea....lol.

The issue with white on a weapon is the fact that it tends to be very difficult to keep it white. I've been told that even the slightest dust particles tend to adhere and stay. Ito is particularly bad because after just a little bit of use, your hands start to sweat, which soaks into your pretty white ito.
Basically, if you're going to hang it on a wall, white is probably fine (make sure you don't dust the shelf/mounting furniture with the katana still in place!). But if you intend on using it in any form, you'll probably end up regreting white.

Yea I figured the white ito would be bad, but even the white saya?
Well in that case on to a new color scheme

I would say white wouldn't be bad for showcasing (even if you use the sword), but I would definitely suggest making a separate tsuka with a different color ito. With swapping being relatively easy, this would allow for the best of both worlds. And you'd have a historical precedent, IIRC, because this is what the more wealthy warriors did, only keeping the blade constant and changing the fittings according to what the warrior needed. A fashion accessory or a tool of war.

put white ito in a case, it grunges up quick. white saya is not too bad, and easier to clean.

Yea I was never planning on going with a white ito. Just a white saya.
Well if a white saya is fine.......then I think a blue ito with a white saya is about to happen.
