SBG has a good common steel types page here www.sword-manufacturers-guide.com/sword-steels.html$300-$400 is a good range for a decent katana. I am sure others will chime in with suggestions of brands and what to look for. So will let them have a chance to post their suggestions. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your sword when you get it.

www.sword-buyers-guide.com/Take some time and wander through the "Real Swords 101" links at the top left. There are a lot of them and they branch out when you get in there so it takes a while. Lots of good info in the manufacturer guide. Browse through the reviews on there and in here. It takes a while to read through the info, and to think about what will suit you best. After that, you will be able to ask more pointed questions, to which you will get better responses. They will also make more sense as you have a better knowledge base yourself. You have a good price range that will give you many many options. You should set your mind now to understand your budget will probably require you to forgo some things you want to get other options you find more important.

OMG! You are me, I was you!
2 to 3 weeks ago I posted the very same words about seeking my first sword in that very same price range!
I ended up with a Huawei T-10 folded katana that i got off of eBay.
But that is not what I wanted to tell you, (as my swords fits me and my goals, and you may have a different situation) What I want to say is....."Ask this forum!"
Every time you see a sword that you think is perhaps 'the one' you want, just copy/paste the address on to this forum and use it to show everyone on this forum the same sword and ask for their views...
Allow all the people here a chance to rip into that sword. Trust me, it will save you time and money
Give people here a chance to send you ideas. Send private messages to people you see have shown an interest in helping you search. Ask for reviews of swords from people that own them.
HOWEVER....always understand that every review from a person that owns a sword is slanted in favor of that sword. So listen to all the advice you get from this forum's members, but dont trust automatically....just compare what you are hearing to other things you are hearing.
The advice I have for your sword quest is: - Stick to a maker people say good things about. - Stick to a sword with a known track record from being really as good as the ads say it is. - Stick to a seller that you can research and trust will not just take your money and run.
The advice I have after you have found the sword you want is: Then dont spend any money until you have come to this forum and posted a topic about the sword you have picked, and allowed people to step up and tell you flat out what they think of that sword, even if that hurts your feelings.
If your topic does not get any attention, then make them notice you and your questions.. You will end up sitting in a far better position if you make use of this SBG forum and the wisdom found here, that you can ever hope to do on your own.
3 weeks ago I was sitting in front of my computer stumped by the ZILLIONS of swords on the market. But I came here, made a real pest of myself at times...pissed-off a few with my constantly asking question after question...
But in the end Im sitting here typing this to you next to the greatest sword of my dreams.....

I have just too many people to thank for helping me out....there are just too many people to list.
But what i can do is pass on the lesson i learned from my experience over the last 3 weeks.
What i have learned is that you got to ask, you got to listen, you got to allow people to be painfully honest to you ....and when you do that....You end up sitting next to your "dream sword"as you type this sentence that is the envy of all my sword class, a sword that is well respected in Kendo/Kumdo halls across the world, and reflects the love i have for the sword arts.
so make a pest of yourself with your questions....take notes...listen, turn right around and ask the same question again if needed....and ...........Learn.
As you learn what to avoid, the path to the one correct sword for you gets more and more narrow, until you find it.
By the time I was at the end of my search there were quite a few true experts here who would agree with my final decision saying, "For God's sake Alan, that sword is close enough, get the damn thing!"
