cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0937753513 Just another example of how you can get seduced and raped by EBay if you don't know what you are doing. This is being sold as a real Napoleonic AN XI light cav saber. Patina and battle damage included. But it is a FAKE: First, the ricasso is over 1 1/2 inches. Napoleonic French ricassos seldom are over 1/4 inch to none at all. They really didn't start using the larger dampeners until the 1830s. There is not a single inspection marker to be seen on the blade or hilt. Government issue weapons would have at least two marks on both the blade and the hilt. The Johdpur bicycle tire washer is typical of India made pieces. The blade damage looks like it was made with a close encounter with a fence. I contacted the author with my concerns and asked them to get professional confirmation before proceeding with this auction. Three days left and it is still up for purchase with no warning to rookie bidders that they aren't going to get a real antique. Welcome to EBay....

Ahhhhhh, aint eBay great.
Several of those item description writers who prolifically list questionable items must be Politicians or Lawyers. Who else can dissemble like that and say absolutely nothing of substantive value?
A carefully crafted 6 paragraph description full of conjecture, buzzwords linked to current trends, and seemingly legitimate qualifiers serves to bring in the dollars whether you actually have a genuine item or not.
P.T. Barnaum aint got nothin on eBay "Antique" brokers.

A couple more hints: -the leather in the grip looks so intact for a sword that was carried on the field 200 years ago... -the oversized scabbard drag -it's also a bad sign if you can read too well the writing on the spine

Well, auction ended today. I sent ebay a complaint 3 days ago and they did nothing. So poor fool paid $863.00 for what he thinks is a genuine $1400.00 antique. Wish I was a fly on the wall when they find out they've been duped. ( I'm sure they'll try to put the piece of shite back up on ebay to see if they can pass on the curse. )
Am I positive this is a dud. Absolutely. Between my and Pinotte's notes this is pure WeaponEdge. Sort to make you wanna go counterfeiting...

Damn! Every now and then I look at sabres on E-Bay but since I am a novice - never buy one for fear of getting screwed. Thanks for posting.

I'll get you one of those for about $200 if you really want - but I'll tell you it's a repro!

Someone put their WEI/Cold Steel one up for bid on ebay last nite. Undoctored, but with no mention of it's provenence. Maybe they're trolling to see if someone wants to pay them $800.00 for theirs.

What KILLS me about that auction though is the fact that there were 31 bids (unbelievable in and of itself!) and NOT a single question was asked!!! none....zip....every single bidder just jumped on the wagon and tossed his money into the air.
Forrest Gump - " stupid is as stupid does"
go figure. But shame on the seller and his very v-a-g-u-e and misleading description.

Questions don't automatically pop on screen on ebay. The seller pays for and controls what gets posted on their auction. As I mentioned I sent the seller a "question" challenging the veracity of the sword. I got a "thanks" back.
The three high bidders at the end were all probably resellers or "antiques dealers" who will more likely be in the business of reselling this items to some poor soul.
Part of the cycle of bad judgements and counterfeiting.

Don't you always pay someone extra for dirtying up a brand new sword for ya?
Purchaser obviously doesn't read our discussion board.
