I share your frustration... There really is ZERO excuse for whatever setting this "SEARCH" thing is set on. I have been on many other forums and this is the ONLY place I have ever run into such a wimpy ability to search things you want to find.
Last week I was told over and over by members of this forum to "Search the older posts" and to "Read past reviews" but the truth is that this proved next to impossible in that each time I wanted a question what people in the past have said about a sword and do my own research I ran into the same message that my words are "too common".
I also found next to everything else about this forum lay-out to be a frustration and aimed at making posts hard to see, hard to find, and hard to respond to.
I actually came to this SBG site to do a little business, but that's hard to do too.

Did you try the little + sign beside the search box? It lets you search in specific forums on the board, and narrows stuff down a bit versus searching every post on the board.
If that doesn't help, try posting in the thread where you were told to 'Use the search function' Something along the lines of ' I tried searching and got no results, does anyone have links or references', or maybe even just 'Please help, I am lost here' might work.

I hope my original post didnt come across as me having a semprini about the forum setup! I just wanted to know if i was doing something wrong as i read many posts that say to use the search function but it never works for me. I always get the same message about my words being too common and when i use the + thingie it still doesnt give me any results.
I'm searching "how to make a tsuba", "making tsuba", "make tsuba" and tried the same with +'s and still no dice. I also have tried searching other things and get the same results.
Am i doing something wrong?

Sounds like you are doing it right, or trying to in any case. Are you just adding a plus sign into the search box like this TSUBA+MAKING, or are you acutally clicking on the little plus sign beside where it says GO? Found this for you- Tsuba Making

I am using the advanced search options, and then the + but still getting no luck. Thanks for the link though!

a trick I learned...
use GOOGLE to search here instead!
I found that the SBG Forum Search function was so pointless to use when I wanted to know what Forum members have said about "T 10 steel", that I had way better luck going to GOOGLE and typing in "SBG FORUM T 10 Steel"
Google would give me a nice long list of past SBG posts to look at and find the one that talked about T10 steel in the context I was seeking.
I know it may sound Funny but it's true that this is what it takes sometimes ...

That was going to be my next suggestion.
Google always seems to get me there faster when used as you pointed out.

I think the whole look of the older site is way better than this current one too.
It's is far more easy to read the posts there,,,far more easy to understand the flow of the conversations.
You know its odd to say this, but a SEARCH function on a forum like this is designed to help people find things and not have to ask members the same questions all the time...But when you dont have a SEARCH function that is up to the job it actually adds to the number of the same questions being asked over and over...
I was told by a person to go check out a few reviews on the SBG forum for "T 10 Steel"..... Such reviews are very much what this SBG site is well known for. And yet it's not easy to actually find any review once you get here...
Ever try to just search for "T 10 steel" here?
Frustrating...

Have to chime in my agreement on this one... with a HT EMSHS on the way to me now, I was curious about customization options for it, and how to go about things like grip rewraps and stuff... I eventually found whole threads on blueing, rewrapping, and all kinds of good stuff by manually paging through the Customization forum, but the search function was totally useless as everything I put in came back as too common.

nice idea, also reminds me of you click on advanced search you can have it search just this forum. On a little side note, You could have went from board index -> sword reviews and just browsed away also. Its not like this is an aged forum that has 1000+ pages of topics. But I do feel your pain with the search function on here. I see a lot of sites use googles search engine, modified to just search their site. How to do it, I dont know. But that should get people the same results as going to google and adding site name to the search string. And with google, it will also search the old forums, bringing their wealth here!

For searching in Google, type in what you want to search for and then at the end type site:forum.sword-buyers-guide.com
This will tell Google to only display results from this forum. This will help if you want to narrow your search to a specific site. I gave up trying to do searches using the search capability too because everything I typed came up as too common.
So what you will type into the google search would be: "how to make a tsuba site:forum.sword-buyers-guide.com"
