What is the reason you would want a Saya with the top part wrapped in rattan?
What does it do?

If memory serves, rattan was a quick fix to a splitting saya, that could spare one the cost of having a new saya made and subsequent time without a sword. Also beneficial as field maintenance while on campaign, until one can return home to the local sayashi.
When applied to a new saya, it reinforces the seams for a time, as well. Not every sword had metal bands around the saya opening, and the glue used back then was not the best.
...It has also evolved a sort of aesthetic appeal to many.

And......2 more cents worth......tactile feel. The rattan is grooved to give a little more grip in the hand when drawing and sheathing your sword.
I personally like it and have a custom-full blond rattan wrapped saya on order.
