Hello there, I'm going to be buying my first Katana in the next couple weeks and I was hoping to get your thoughts and opinions on the following swords:
Hanwei Great Wave Hanwei Practical Plus Elite
Cheness Kaze Cheness Tenchi
Bugei Crane Bugei Dragonfly
Please keep in mind that these are just examples of swords I've been looking at but I'm not set on any of them and I'm open to better options should they exist.
Basically, I want a Katana with around an 11" handle, w/o bo hi, light enough to be a fast sword, strong enough to cut through bone, a good steel, good quality, and good fittings. My budget is up to 1500.00. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all!

Im sure no expert on swords ....But as no one had answered you yet I did a little checking, and so far I have yet to see a flaw with the Hanwei Great Wave or the Hanwei Practical Plus Elite.
They both seem very kick-ass to me....

Bugei is the better option from what you have selected there. The Bugei Peace would win my vote.

Between the Bugei and the Cheness there is a very large price discrepancy. Am I right in assuming that you have a decently large budget, but aren't committed to spending the whole thing?

I think the Hanwei Bamboo Mat or Bushido/Tori XL would be a perfect sword for you...If you are getting a Hanwei, I would at least get a Powdered Steel folded (bushido/TORI) or Special alloy (Bamboo Mat) instead of the usual high carbon fare like Great Wave(although I like the fittings) and Practical.
All the Bugei blades are the powdered steel blades made by Hanwei (not sure if they are the same blades or best of the best). I would definitely get a Bugei if I had the means and I prefer the Peace Katana and Old pine
I really like the fittings and blades on the Bugei swords although have not taken the plunge as they take weeks to make and are over 1K...

My 2 cents on your question. The only sword listed I have experience with is the Cheness Tenchi. As a sword the handling is abysmal. It is however EXTREMELY tough and durable.

The Hanwei practical plus elite is one of my favorite blades. It's a pretty beefy blade and not light. But it's very well balanced so swinging with one hand is possible even with the weight. And it's razor sharp and stays that way for a long time.

Bugei. I have a Samurai, and I'm very impressed with it.

I would recommend one of the cheaper katana from your list to use for practice and one of the Bugei. Thought process is not to damage an expensive katana while learning and training.
I have or have had the Hanwei Great Wave, Hanwei Practical Plus Elite, Cheness Kaze and Cheness Tenchi and they are good first swords.

I used to own raptor shinogi zukuri, bamboo mat, and bugei peace katana. for beater, I think raptor would be a good choice. I kindda prefer it than bamboo mat, actually... bugei peace katana, of course, on totally different league. in the beginning I wasn't sure I want a sword with bo-hi (or even two hi!) however after handling three of them, bugei peace come up first. non bo-hi sword felt like crowbar now after I handle peace katana I have 28" blade/12" tsuka model. on handling of non bo-hi, I prefer raptor than bamboo mat... but of course bamboo mat is much prettier with its amazing hamon. but that's just a newbie opinion...

SeanF: That's correct. My budget is 1500.00 but I do not need to spend that much if I can find something for less that will make me just as happy. Thank you all very much for your help and suggestions. You guys are very knowledgeable and kind! So far, I think I'm going to buy a couple swords. I'll probably buy one of the Hanwei's that I mentioned, a Cheness, and maybe a Bugei later on. The Bugei Peace looks very nice. They are local to me so maybe I'll go in and check out their swords first hand. When I do get my swords, I'll be sure to post some photos for us all to see! Thanks again fellas! -Ken

Great idea! Aesthetics and handling for practice & display. Tough and durable when it comes time to cut stuff.
