So I ordered a Hanwei Claymore from SMKW druing their recent % off sale. I was excited to get one at a reasonable price seeing how things are with Hanwei these days. It arrived today and I could not wait to open it. Sure enough I opened it and the blade was tarnished beyond belief . It actually turned black in spots and upon close inspection you could see fingerprints imbedded into the finish. I suspect it was a return that was put in storage for many months (or years) without cleaning first. All in all the sword was a mess and I sent it back. I am totally disappointed as they had no others to make an exchange.

You shouldn't have returned it. Such spots are usually easy to polish off and even if not, black spots aren't dangerous for sword, only red rust goes deeper with time and is dangerous. I have a few such spots on a sword I bought on a sale here in Croatia, it also lay in a storage for quite some time and got these spots. It just looks like a sword used for some time, but also taken care of and I like it.

Truthfully , I did try a metal polish which had little effect. It would have been a lot of work to get the blade looking new and just polish was not going to do it alone. I bought the sword primarly for display so looking good was important to me. Had it been advertised and priced as a used sword I would not have a problem but it was represented as new and should look new.

Sorry to hear you were disappointed with your purchase. But I wouldn't be too quick to blame Hanwei - I'm guessing it's far more likely the sword was handled and poorly stored at the retailers, and thats why it was being sold off at a reduced rate. The retailer should have made it plain that the sword wasn't in pristine condition. I hope the retailer refunds the full cost of the purchase..plus what it cost you to send it back.

I've been to SMKW myself a few times. It's a cool joint, but all told they're only in it to make a profit; they simply don't really care about the upkeep of the weapons they sell. I suspect you're exactly right in your guess that it was a return that they just stuck in a corner and didn't do anything to until they sold it to you. As for the tarnishing/rusting, some sandpaper could've fixed that. It's a little bit of a harsh solution, but with a little time and work, those marks are fixable. A Hanwei Claymore isn't that fancy of a sword to start with anyway

I do not blame Hanwei. I liked the sword a great deal but It was obvoiusly a used sword. I would guess it was a return. The greatest area of tarnish is where you would grip the blade for Half Swording. It must have been in storage for a very long time for the blade to almost blacken in that area.
