After searching for examples of this type of hilt, I am beginning to think the original may have had the knot shaped basket on only one side and the other side had a ring. Some German rapiers had this type of design, as seen in this example from Darkwood Armory: Girard Thibault advocated gripping this style of hilt in an unusual fashion: If the Pilsen rapier is meant to be gripped this way, perhaps that is why the basket seems small for people with larger hands who grip the hilt in the more typical fashion. I placed an order for one ($130 shipped!). I'll give this a try when mine arrives.

Thanks for the photos Aikidoka. Now I feel better about my quillion block. The one in the photo seems to be about relative to my hand/quillion size, and felt the quillion block a bit small. So maybe not. I hope that you enjoy your Pilsen as much as I have mine.

Steampunk done right is actually quite nice. The problem is that most creators overdo it. If you use logic, and don't throw in 500 unnecessary buttons, and the form follows it's function (a scientific rule), then it is good steampunk. Unfortunately, this kind of logic in fanfic is scarce, as most people don't care, and want it as flashy and overly convoluted as possible.

My brother has an earlier version of this one. Same basic design, he has had it for over 30 years and has done some bashing. It has held up well and probably cost him around $65 back then so I'd recommend this one. I debated buying one myself but I have three war hammers already so I'm going to pass.
