I have to admit, I've never been a huge fan of buying loads of tatami. Plastic bottles and aluminum cans have seemed decent enough targets for practice, and things to be recycled anyway. And of course meat is the most realistic, and can be eaten (or sometimes gotten if it's already to be disposed of, as I once did when I lived next door to a DNR officer who had to pick up roadkill).
Then again, I really can't consume that much bottled stuff lately (or that much meat ever). (Watching uric acid, long story.) So a reason to thaw in my attitude toward tatami would be nice.
Anybody come up with a good use for your cut tatami? How does it burn in place of firewood?--that alone would make me much more partial to using it more.

I recut them. Dry them and next time you cut, roll them inside a new mat.I recut my used peices like this at least once.

I always burn mine once I stack up the pieces and try to cut them as much as possible. Let them dry for a few days and if you really want (what I do) take a spray bottle with lighter fluid in it and spritz them just a bit and they will keep your fire burning strong for hours. Also a little sword shop in the Wisconsin dells had a simple and original idea: Use a cut, unrolled mad for a display mat for some swords. lol I got a kick out of that when I saw it.

Dont' burn them, that's a waste - recycle them into food! Yes, you heard me right, get yourself a compost bin, put all the cut up tatami in there, along with your kitchen scraps, and when it rots down in a few months, put it in your garden. The plants will take up the nutrients and produce food. Then eat the food. Simple science, the stuff decomposes and the plants take it up to produce stuff you can eat. Tatami into the food of your choice (fruit and vegetables), simple! Then you can use the energy you just gained from that food to chop more up tatami! C'mon guys, that's gotta be worth at least one karma point, practice sword cutting and save the planet!

Composting is always a good idea for organic material. Fill burlap bags with your mat cuttings and use for archery practice. Or even if ambitious, build your self a burlap bag man scarecrow style filled with mat cuttings and attack it.

Just wanna say THANKYOU johnwalter for the advice on re-drying cut pieces and re-rolling inside a uncut mat to make a double mat! Works perfect. Now i get a double mat for the price of one

Man, every time I see that picture of Boromir, I see that gif which has him coming on to Aragorn... and no, I'm not gonna link it here. Anyway, tatami. Composting is an excellent idea; they'll decompose much faster if you cut 'em really small Otherwise a wood-chipper will do the job in seconds. Drying them out and using them to display is also an excellent idea.

I don't garden, so composting is out--but a lot of good ideas here, thanks all! I love campfires, so of course knowing they burn well is great. I especially like both the rolling inside a mat for double mats idea and the padding for archery targets idea.

This may sound idoitic (Also it's coming from a newb), but isn't Tatami used for flooring... :?: You can use the cut pieces (I thing the big chunks of cut tatami) for flooring for fun?... For those looking for a Japanese feel in your home for the same price for your tatami omote!... (Advice newbie) :?
