This is actually quite a common myth. You can be just as accurate drawing to the ear as you can be drawing to the mouth as many of the English Warbow society guys can attest to. john Good on ya mate

I didn't mean to imply that you couldn't be accurate drawing to your ear, just that it would take more practice to get to the same point with instinctive shooting, but hey, WTF do I know? I learned to shoot drawing to my mouth, and I've never actually shot a bow drawing to my ear so I can't speak from any kind of personal experience. Just what I've heard and what would seem to make sense in my head.

Just so all of you guys know .. Your killing me....... lol . Short Story - My passions run deep for History, arms & armor SCA events etc, and since i stumbled upon this site last October, i've been streamlining my collection: up- grades, letting go of lower end ones etc , bought from a few members, got more in-depth to customizing, now i notice an archery thread, in an instant i started thinking yeah that was fun as a kid back when i was a boy scout , fast forward to all the events i go to thinking " a Bow would be nice to shoot again, and i dont have a bow in my collection", but dis miss it & end up getting more steel. I read this section from page 1, and well needless to say i ordered the standard English Long bow from rudder 45# @ 28 -$119. like not even 5 mins ago LMAO. Little woman just looks at me, grins and says " Oh Honey whatever makes you Happy, the look on your face when buying or using your Shiney, Sharp, pointy, things is priceless just don't forget our vacation coming up". Really though i admit this site with all of the info & friendly atmosphere etc is great it lets me dive further into everything That much more. Can you say SBG forums & peoples ideas = purchases gone wild like some addicted people that cruise the HSN late at nite ? Only difference is in our case it's Arms & Armor Gone Wild lol Thanks Campers more Over-time at work coming up LOL Bul~

Grumble grumble.
I decided to start taking up archery again from my university days.
I joined an archery group that shoots just outside of Windsor castle here in the UK. Pretty good for a setting! However my trusty English longbow was not up to their standards and now I have to have costly and time consuming Horn nocks installed!!
I am pretty annoyed with this as it does strike me that outside of university, clubs are so finicky and snobbish about their little petty rules.
Grrr... I am in two minds of if I will sell the bow and buy a horse bow instead or have the horn nocks installed.

Ok Guys along with my previous Post with the Bow on the way (45# 28" draw) i am going to go grab some carbon shaft arrows from a local outfit store And was thinking about buying these wooden cedar ones for a comparison of the two heres the link: www.ebay.com/itm/6-PO-CEDAR-TRAD ... 2a1a5e9228 Now what i have to ask is with my 28" draw what is correct arrow length i should be using? Should it only be 1" past my draw? Or as per the link i was going to choose 45- 50# spined with bodkin tips, i am assuming they cut & taper down the 31" shaft for the point . Is the choice of both things correct for myself & my bow? Last Question : is there pro's cons of left-winged Vs right/ straight set feathers as far as accuracy?I will only be using this for target Shooting, but i still want everything to be correct in the right manner so to speak " The Right Way" and set-up, As well if anyone has suggestions for other places to pick up arrows feel free to let me know I welcome any imput Bul~

Bulvoy, personally I draw to my designated draw length and have the arrows at that specific length. By drawing to the tip I know I am drawing consistently. Edit: Actually, I try to draw to the tip however long my arrows are. They vary from 31 to 33 inches.
William, that sucks mate. Though that isn't the first time I've heard about that sort of carry on. Is your club part of the English Longbow Society? I'm almost certain period longbows didn't always have horn nocks...

thats one nice thing about the clube here in london ontario its very lax they allow any kind of re-curve or longbow as long as it has no sights, unfortunately they practice outside the city and I dont drive so I can't join till I find a member or someone who can drive me out

Have a question guys, i now have my rudder english long bow & my brothers long bow bought from KP archery, should i coat the bow in poly or some kind of clear coat? to finish the bow for added protection/ strength? or is it something i don't need to do or worry about ?

Your Rudderbow should have a finish already applied. Not sure what they're using these days, my bow came with a finish which is still going fairly strong after 7-8 years (I may have had it for longer, I got it sometime around 2002-2004). It has a couple small spots that I notice the finish thinning after a heavy drizzle while in the tree stand, but overall has held up great. I can't comment on KP since I don't own one. If you're curious, shoot an email to Jim at Rudderbows (or call), I've been corresponding with him a bit and he's great to talk to and fairly quick to respond. I would take a guess that the finish on my bow is a wax, but I think he uses a polyurethane on a few of his bows (the youth bows, maybe?)...
A good temporary solution would be a thin layer of surfboard wax just to keep the wood from drying out. Easy to apply and easy to strip off once you make a final decision.

Thanks Aaron i'll shoot an email, states thats its finished in poly, but seems more like a hardened wax of some sort thats why i was curious.the Kp one is just bare grain wood 100% positive of that
