For me, as with many others, it all started with the Conan the Barbarian movie. It was then further enhanced by Highlander the Movie and the TV series... ...but the biggest main contributors were likely when i started playing D&D and other RPG's when I was 15 or so... and around the same time I started training in the martial arts. I also did some fencing with my father... and all of this was within the same span of time.., around 12-19 years old. So it all settled in and I was hooked.

Everyone keeps mentioning the Conan movies. See, while I watched that fairly early in my life, I saw something else far earlier. Though to be fair, I guess I'm a bit younger than many on the forums. My first introduction to Conan (which was quickly followed by my uncle's collection of Savage Sword and other Conan comics) was this, which also contributed greatly to the whole 'OH MY GOSH. SWARDZ.' thing. (Yay I get to try out embedding.) Okay apparently I'm retarded and I still can't embed. Here you go, guys. Have a -link- to the world's manliest cartoon.

My Grandfather had some old swords he let me play with as a kid. I never considered buying a sword until I got into the Highlander movie and tv series. Started out with Japanese swords and branched into European. My area of interest now is pretty much Viking era and medieval. Have a few that do not fit into this time period though.

That was a pretty manly intro. I did notice some shuriken action in there!

I've loved swords as long as I can remember. I think all boys love swords and fighting when they are young. The earliest influence I can remember was reading the Redwall books, by Brian Jacques, in elementary school. Even though they are children's books, they're violent! Anyone who read them will know what I mean. There are so many warriors and warlords, and armies and battles and sieges. I think that is what really got me interested in medieval weapons and combat, which lead to a broader interest in history in general.

I'll be honest, all I ever hear here is Conan, Conan, Conan. And I've never even heard anyone say a word about Conan till I came here!
What got me into swords originally was, I suppose.... The Legend Of Zelda, one of the first games I ever played, loved swords ever since. Then I started watching anime later on in life and that got me even more interested. Originally I thought swords were magical, indestructible weapons, that you kept on your back and ran around using to slay monsters. I thought simply touching any part of the sword's blade would make you lose your fingers.
Ah those were the days, now for me, swords are more like a tool, in some cases, a beautiful, soulful tool. In others, a black shard of steel, used to gut people in alleyways. In any case, the thing that truly started me off was that legendary game, that is still played to this day.

Actually, I was more of a King Kull guy from the start! Seriously, "The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune" , "The Shadow Kingdom" , "The Skull of Silence" , "The Striking of the Gong" , "Kings of the Night" ... Some of Howard's absolutely best work. And the early issues of Kull the Conquerer from Marvel, with art by John and Marie Severin? Priceless! The adaptation of "Wolfshead" I read when barely able to read--and I still have the beat-up, coverless, dog-eared copy.

what got me into swords is kung fu movies like once upon a time in china or old jackie chan movies (fearless hyena, to kill with intrigue) other than i don't remember the others but i always wanted to have those training hall weapon collection you see in kung fu movies but with euro and japanese sword on it too but i guess that would be a too expensive dream

Biggoron's Sword. It was huge, and you couldn't use a shield at the same time. It was a more durable version of the Giant's Knife, which broke after a few hits.

I have no idea what got my interest in swords started. If anything, my love of swords is what got me into gaming and fantasy franchises. My mom said that ever since I could choose my own toys, I would go after the plastic swords. Mostly Katana and Fantasy-Euro swords. Ninja movies/games/franchises had a large part of getting me interested in other forms of weapons though. My liking of Katana got me interested in Japan, Japan got me interested in Ninja.

Hey Neovenetar, I understand about the Conan thing. Actually, as far as shows go, I grew up watching all those old Greek era adventure shows back in the '60s, Jason and the Argonauts, the Sinbad movies, all those Hercules movies, etc, etc.. I fell in love with swords and sword and sandal/sorcery adventures due to them, long before I ever heard of Conan or Robert E. Howard. FB

Honestly Star Wars probably got me into swords specifically Return of the Jedi. Before that it was all Batman for me as a kid but after Star Wars I got into pretty much any movie with a hero with a sword. The final duel from ROTJ is still on my top best "sword" scenes list.

I loved the fight between Luke and Darth Vader, when Darth, wounded and hurt, hurled that evil leader of the dark side down into the nuclear reactor or whatever it was! Awesome fight! I would love to have a light sabre, but if you think about it, it would be a matter of time before most of us accidently cut our own arm or leg off. FB

Yes there is so much emotion in that scene and duel that spoke to me even as a kid. And yeah as an adult I don't really have illusions on being a master with a lightsaber...still wouldn't stop me from having one if available lol.
