Hi! I've got many weird interests, among which I can count bagpiping, skinning and tanning hides, metalworking and vehicle modifications to mention a few, but one of the latest bugs to bite me is manufacturing and firing miniature black powder cannons. Anyone else with a similar interest? My latest creation: Show me yours!

That was pretty amazing! I can definitely see how making and shooting those things would be addicting. How many do you have?

Hey man! Sorry about the late response, totally forgot about this thread since no one seemde to show any interest in it... They are a lot of fun! Although, that might just be because firearms are generally forbidden here in sweden. I can easily see how most americans would be bored by something like this as they have a greater abundance of firepower already. But for me, this is pretty much the only way to experience some good old explosions in my spare time, and I enjoy it I've made three thus far, all are different designs with my personal one being the simplest. The most complex, a replica of an old naval cannon with a "button" on the back end, ornamentary rings along the sides of the barrel and a flared nozzle I gave to my father. The third one, a simpler design with a rounded back end and flared nozzle up front I gace to my mate as a housewarming gift  Here's some pics of my father's cannon (haven't got any of the one I made for my mate unfortunately, but it looks like this only a little bit shorter, without the rings and with a more rounded back end and a slightly larger flared nozzle): The reason I got to thinking about this old thread was that I tried to shoot some slow-motion vids of firing the cannon. I'm not really satisfied with the result as I think I might be able to improve the picture quality somewhat, but my camera does film at very low resolution when fraps increase... Anyhow, here's the vid if you're interested And here's another destruction video:

My katana can't even cut through glass jars. Nicely done!

Haha, it probably could but I'm guessing it would pay dearly for it... Glass is hard  The small bb-gun pellets I shoot out of these cannons shatter into tiny little pieces upon impact, and they are solid little pieces of fairly elastic plastic Thanks man, glad you like it

GOOD GOD MAN! I can see how that could become addictive. Given my propensity for "over-doing it" I would end up building miniature forts and a battery of miniature siege guns, then proceed to blow the forts apart and experiment with how to build the most seige-proof miniature forts I could. Then explosive miniature cannon balls... The mayhem could be endless!

Haha, that is a severely good idea! I wonder if I could shatter rock with these things, if so I could build a simple structure like a tower or something and then blow it down... I definitely should be able to break wood if it's thin enough, maybe I could build a small scale pirate ship and naval man of war and have them battle it out, broadside to broadside... Then I could make chained cannonballs to break the masts etc etc... I'm seriously gonna try and come up with some alternative targets and get shooting some more, thanks for planting the idea in my head! I worry though that I'd become too emotionally attached to my models and not be able to destroy them, so I need to come up with some cheap and non-complicated alternatives... Suggestions? What would you guys want to see getting blown up?

You and i have similar taste in stupid hobbies, sir. Of course, i all ways built miniature Trebuchet, your cannon are more impressive.
That said, I say blast a sword edge for some old school cool BB splitting. I think the banshee shouldwork well for that, if i recall correctly.

Haha, I've actually built a trebuchet! Well, technically two... But one was made out of legos The other one was made out of wood, had a main body structure about as high as my chest, with a three metre throwing arm and could hurl a medium sized rock somewhere between 30-50 metres depending on how you set it up  Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it Cool idea! I don't know if my camera is fast enough or able to film at a high enough resolution to actually catch the process well enough, but I'll definitely try it! lots of other variables to overcome as well, like aim etc... But I'll try! Thanks for the tip! Keep the ideas coming and I will try to make a SBG cannon blasting compilation!

These things are amazing, hahaha. I can't build them, but I'll watch any stuff you put up! Just about the coolest thing I've seen in a while.

Think "sand castles" only not at the beach. One dump truck load of dirt in the back yard and you could build all kinds medieval/renniasance era castles. Maybe even build them like a diorama on a half-sheet of plywood or decking (4'x4').They wouldn't have to be elaborate. Just a few walls and towers would do for starters. That way light charges would crumple them in a realistic way without too much expense and noise from the mass of repetitive firing. At least that's an idea for starters. I bet your imagination will go wild if you really get into it. It'd really be wild to see simplified versions of something similar to these get blasted to smithereens. Uhh... am I overdoing it again?... :?

Sand castles is a good idea! I worry though that the bullet is just gonna bury itself in the castle rather than bringing it down, but I guess trial and error will be my method here Those would indeed be awesome to shoot at, but then again there is the problem of spending way too much time on something that's destined for destruction... :? However, maybe... I might be able to make a mold and cast thin (non-solid) structures using cement or some kind of plaster. That way I could make several buildings very fast, and they just might crumble in a "realistic" or at least cool way since cement becomes very brittle without reinforcements. I also could up the size of my cannons, that way I will have less of a picture quality issue (easier to capture big stuff). I'll see what I can do, the amount of possibilities is huge! I think I have a sand castle mold of just that, a castle. With structured walls and the whole shabang. If I could just mold a thin walled enough structure out of that, it'd look really awesome when fired upon! I know what I'm gonna be doing tomorrow, that's for sure! Stay tuned for more carnage!

Or just a simple sand fortification like this, using a few different plastic containers to mold various shapes?...

Yep, could well work. But as Is aid, I'm a little worried that such a small bullet will simply embed itself in the sand rather than breaking the sand castle down... and if it does fall down, I worry that it won't look like a building crumbling as much as it would look like a "splash" you know... I will definitely try it out though, might work very well indeed! I'm just trying to think up alternatives should one option fail

Hi guys! Haven't been able to get any minature model destruction done yet, but what I do have for you is some household object destruction! Waterballoons, eggs, apples and potatoes with faces, all being shot to smithereens  Hope you like it!

One more video: Cup of jello, with paper eyes and mouth attached. It's a jello-ghost  Unfortunately the gunsmoke covered the impact pretty effectively, but the bits you can see look pretty good

Thanks dude, I appreciate it It's a real shame the gunsmoke covers the view, because I liked how the video quality ended up being pretty decent compared to other 1000fps vids I've made... But I've made three more cups of jello, and I'm gonna try again! This time I'm gonna place the cannon a bit further away from the target, and hopefully the smoke will disperse before reaching into the field of view.
