Hey thought I would share this PDF I found on a prepper site. A Long Term Survival Guide Scrounging Metal and Survival Blacksmithingblacksmithingtutorials.com/long-term-survival-guide-scrounging-metal-survival-blacksmithing/*updated link It has all sorts of neat info from finding/harvesting iron ore, what scraps work work well, improvised anvil out of train track, how to make charcoal, how to make a forge, making billows, making black smith tools, and much much more. While this might not be everyone's cup of tea, or useful in its entirety to all, I imagine some of you would enjoy and maybe learn a few things from it. Something like this could possibly be used by a beginning hobbyist to use as one of many references. And of course a good guide to the prepper or survivalist who wants to know how to set up a improvised blacksmith.

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing. I am curious about what others will say about this pdf's content.
I am one of the worst handyman around so I can't judge how useful or doable this content is.

Yes I am not a metal worker really. Other than doing some silver smithing when I was younger. I do know some of the basic theories etc and from what I gather the info is at least basically good, as in there was nothing that I saw that was outright wrong. While there are probably some better ways to do a lot of the stuff, the concept here in the pdf is blacksmithing in a post apocalyptic or survival situation. It is made for someone to start from nothing and build up something usable from the spare parts or what they can find. In this respect the info may not give everything needed for a modern forge, but enough to get by for someone in a survival situation.

Someone who knows they're stuff pretty good took the time to make that up, compiling info from a few different sources.

Well that's pretty high praise and validation there.

Just a thought- If one is in a post-apocalyptic, survival situation ( heaven forbid ) just HOW is one supposed to READ a .pdf file ?? No electricity, fried computers ??

LOL yes I know, hopefully before then you have printed it out on the printer and have hard copy. Though there are many preppers who use smart phones, i-pods, etc to store pdfs of useful info, maps, even videos and plan to use solar or wind up chargers to keep them alive. Decent in theory to be able to store large amounts of knowledge in a small light weight package, books weight a lot and take lots of space. I prefer the hard copy to electronic copy, though do store some pdfs on my smart phone and have a solar charger.

Glad to hear this pdf is actually a useful guide from some people who would know. As I mentioned I know some theory but am not a metal worker so would not to be able to review it as well as someone who has years of experience in a forge.

FYI, I found the link was no longer valid, so found a new one, and fixed it. This new link takes you to a site rather than direct download. There is also related topic downloads that might be worth while to some, like a pdf on making charcoal, making tongs, basic blacksmithing.
Just figured it would be good to update this since I found the link no longer worked.
