This is just my amateur Google searching so please don't take it for fact and wait for someone more knowledgeable in such things, but the two headed eagle appearsthroughout history in various cultures, however the inscription on the blade looked greek to me. I plugged in what I thought were the symbols in that last word: ελλανα into a translator and it spat back Hellanian.

I'm surprised noone else has chimed in lol. Sorry I couldn't be more help. To further support the greek theory of all the double headed eagles I found, the only one that had a cross on the shield belonged to Greece, specifically, the Hellenic armed forces. Looks like my translation may have been spot on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Helle ... alFlag.svg

Hey bro this is an old Greek sword i am Greek it looks like an old buzandium one becouse of the 2 headed eagle of the sheath thow it can also be a wallhanger reproduction. The letters of the blade say :ζ'ήτω η αθάνατη Ελλαδα. which means :long live the immortal Greece. the simbol carvings above and below of the words are called :Μαίανδρος or meandros. A small info of what meandros means.Btw what are the origin of this blade where did you find it?
The ancient Greek symbol, the Meander, a symbol of victory and unity, the symbol of the Infinite and Eternal Life and the perpetual course we in this world of ours! Inspired by the many bends of the river Maeander, which has a total length of over 500 kilometers whole will be one of the most historic symbols of the Greek World and will be named and Greek Key, as well as indicating the origin of all things that bring him over the ! A FEW WORDS as a symbol can be mainly used in decoration, but in effect will be stamped as most Greek ancient Greek objects will bring the draft Meander. As a shape will not miss nor the Acropolis! It may be born of prehistoric times, however, will be reborn and take the main but not the final form in the Geometric Era! Figure plain and simple which reminds us of the river Maeander and the helical turns, the ancient Caria in Asia Minor! Symbol of all Greeks the Meander and will be used in vases, temples, monuments, sculptures, objects, weapons and armor, clothing in all corners of the Greek World. The same format will be there in the famous shield of Philip II which has been found and there these days! I managed to jump through the Roman Empire and Byzantine Civilization! So is the Meander one of the leading Greek symbol was used primarily on major periods of Greek history!

Thanks so much for that lengthy information. I have inherited the sword as it has been handed down from some relative who was English but spent a lot of time In Greece in the early 1900's. The small chain on the side seems relatively new but the fabric falls off like dust each time it is handled so I am researching how best to prereserve it. It looks to have been used rather than an ornament, but one side is more faded than the other so maybe it did hang on a wall or perhaps if worn for along time one side could have faded from the weather. It has been a treasure in our family for 3 generations that I know of but unfortunately the person who could have shed some light on its origins has long since passed away.
