I was looking for a sword that was durable, strong, and brutal as it is resilient like the real thing, but most importantly cost vs quality. I researched functionality, how the blade is made, what it is made out of, the place making the blades. Just like anything else there are a handful of companies that are strong in quality as they are respectful, which is how i came across this site.
After weeding through the wall-hangers and finding who the quality makers were, I compared them and came up with what i thought was the most resilient besides spending thousands. I ordered from here because after reading other site's, including the manufacturer, this one had the best coverage. The bonus case, sleeve, and display stand are very much appreciated.
When i first opened it up and saw it i knew this was quality, holding it confirmed that. This blade is well made. Of course i took everything apart to inspect and everything was extremely tight and well made, very impressed. I didn't have to do much more than polish it up with some Flitz and re-oil.
A snap of the Mei
Gave the Tang a good polish, a lil refinish on it to give it a shine. Placed a shim in the saya to make it absolutely tight and polished up the pieces.
It's a beast, handles extremely well and balance is solid. The Ha can cut hairline thin strips through newspaper, absolutely amazing!
Name: Yamakami Katana (Mountain Guardian)
Blade: Through Hardened 9260 Silicon Alloy Carbon Spring Steel.
Overall Length (+ Saya) : 42"
Treatment : Full Hand Forged, Through Hardened, Oil Quenched, Hand Polished
Finish: Tameshigiri Polish
Blade Dimension: 28" Length, 0.25" Width, 1.50" Height
Sori (Curvature): 0.7"
Weight: 2 lbs 15 oz (no saya), 3 lbs 14 oz (with saya), 9 lb shipping weight.
Tsuba/Fuchi/Kashira: Blackened Steel "Mount Fuji" Tsuba
Balance Point : 6" above tsuba
Tsuka/Ho: 11" Wood
Tsuka Ito: Brown Cotton
Mekugi : 2 X Wood (Double Pinned)
Same : Real Ray Skin Panel Wrap
Saya: 30.5" Black Glossy Lacquered Medium Hardwood
The blade has a beautiful finish and hamon, even though it's machine polished it's wonderfully done with a mirror like sheen.
When i gripped the Tsuka, it felt very natural and i could feel the power of the blade.
The Tsuba really caught my eye also with the Mt. Fuji design, very simple and pleasing.
The rest of the fittings are also simple but pleasing.
The black lacquer saya compliments everything perfectly. I researched carefully and found Carnauba Wax (toluene free) polishes, removes swirls, and protects it well.
The quality of it is pleasing and equally the functionality. I couldn't find a better sword for this price range, it meets those in the $1,000+ range easily.
Tons of pros, only cons i had were small scuffs on fittings and a few on the blade which are easily removed, not any real cons. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a beast of a Katana. And for a more "traditional" style i would say the 9260 Tenchi Katana.
