Hey Guys, After searching I couldn't find anyone that reviewed the Blacksword by Windlass, I was thinking about getting this come tax time. I know it might be whippy, but if anyone can tell me about anything else that might be bad or good. I do have concerns about the hued/blackened blade, pictures of course show it as being black as all get out, but pictures are almost different in person. And if anyone has any thoughts on the Raven Claw fighting knife as well, that would be awesome. kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=501176kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=401472

Hey, Grims; 14thforsaken has two Raven Claw knives, so you can pm him and ask about them. As for the Blacksword, I asked about it a little over a year ago and I believe it was Sean who said that he'd seen or handled it in a shop and thought it looked cheap and plastic-y. I can't remember his exact words, but those were the general sentiment; pity, too, 'cause I've always thought it was a pretty neat looking sword.

Yea, I don't own a black-blade and that would be pretty cool to have and go along with the Raven knife.

Well, it is fairly early in the morning for y'all normal folks, so, give it some time and maybe someone will chime in about it more authoritatively.

I have a Raven claw. Not really a good fighting knife, the little diamonds on the handle can create a hot spot on your hands.
It's cool for costum piece, I wear mine at some fantasy and pirate faires. The black on the blade can come off really easy.

Odingaard had this to say about it on the old forum:
I still find it humorous how much the sword description from MRL matches Gurthang/Mormegil from The Silmarillion.

Later in the thread a rep from MRL (Ally) came in and said it was hot chemical blued.
Still, supposed to be a horrible-handling sword.

You could also buy just about any sword and antique the guard, pommel and blade with cold blue or a like brand. You could make it as dark as you like or contrast the fittings and blade.

Yep, I was doing that with a Windlass blade a few years ago (sword or Reynald from the KoH collection), but I didn't have all of the tools to finish the job. The hardest part, with a hand application like that, is getting a nice even finish. Certainly can be done, but I struggled with it on my first try.

I've had the Raven Claw for about 8 years now and I like it. I put a decent edge on it and did some cutting in my offhand. In the inverted grip and offhand it slice cleanly through water bottles. This coupled with a hawk or suitable handaxe will be a devestating combination.

Most of you are talking complete b*llshit here about the Windlass Blacksword. Excuse me, but I couldn't hold myself. I personally own one piece. I bought it from kultofathena.com , I ordered it sharpened. After 2 months of extensive use, I can say that this sword is one of the best in its price range. It is one solid, heavy and well balanced cutter. It has great spring temper (verified by me against wood branches), the black coating is solid and besides 3-4 minor scratches it holds very well. The sword isn't whippy by any means, you can make simultaneous cut and change direction without problems. Thrusting with it is also solid. Well, it may not be Angus Trim sword for ten times the price, but for $200 it is a top notch. I got it, I can tell. Personally, it went beyond my initial expectations after all the bad things I've read against it. I am glad that I am self-opinionated guy and bought this Blacksword after all.

I really like the look of this sword i`m glad you are happy with it. Can you please make a review of your sword especially a cutting test video mate?
Ps:Atrim swords are around 450-1000 afaik that`s not 10x of blacksword.

Show me these two thousand dollar Atrims. Show me your extensive experience with european swords.

metinemre, I had overheated there for the Atrims price, when I said they are 10 times more expensive I didn't meant it for real. Nonetheless, you got a valid argument. I also wished I did a review of the Blacksword, but I got a nice offer here for it so reviewing is a long gone option. Based on my honest word, katana it ain't, but it managed to cut light targets as a single or double water-filled cola bottles. By my opinion it did its work way better on the harder targets, chopping small wood branches (around 1" or 2,5 cm in diameter). I haven't pushed it to the limits, but I accidently hit my solid wooden stand in one occasion and the blade bite deep and didn't suffer any damage. I think that's because of the spring temper Windlass use to put on those blades. Because of it many consider them to be "whippy", but against hard targets whippiness may mean no damage. I still don't consider the Blacksword to be off-charts springly, maybe little more than average. Overall a nice weapon for the price. Aaron, as I wrote upwards, I can't show you a two-thousand $ Atrim. I was exaggerating on purpose. Maybe some collector would sell his tactical Atrim for that kind of price if there is an available buyer, who knows? And, with all due respect, I don't need extensive experience with European swords (or any particular sword) for me to see when a sword cuts and when a sword has no damage after I test it.
