Hello everyone! I've been visiting (i.e. lurking) this forum for a little while, and I've used the guide itself for quite some time to guide my purchases somewhat and learn about purchasing a good sword. I currently have the following swords: A cold steel longsword: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... Long+Sword Cold steel colichemarde: www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... arde+Sword and a cold steel 1904 Austrian saber www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... rian+Saber If you haven't recognized, I am rather keen on Cold steel because I find their products to be of a high quality in addition to their strength and efficiency. That being said, I am now at a loss when I try to get something that cold steel doesn't really provide (okay aside from the greatsword which is backordered and Im not a huge fan.) So here is my price range and the features I'd like in a sword; I welcome any recommendations, and I appreciate your help! I'm willing to spend between $150-300 not including shipping (but I'd prefer to stay below 250 if possible). I'm looking for an overall length of about 50-55inches, with a blade length of about 40-44. (this would give me more length than the longsword I have and make it feel like more of a twohanded weapon.) I'd be fine with a weight anywhere from 3lbs to about 5 and a half lbs. (This will obviously differ depending on the point of balance, but generally this is what I want. I want something that will cut well and preferably pretty good at thrusting if possible. (not sure how good swords of this type are at thrusting!) And finally, I'd greatly prefer siderings on the guard. Furthermore, if anyone has any questions about my swords and how I like them, feel free to ask and I'll give you my expereince with them. Sincerely, Joe

Thanks for the help so far guys! I dont feel like I could easily use the lowlander, but the claymore from Hanwei looks pretty nice, especially for the price. Are they a good/reputable carrier? Or does anyone know of a review of this product?
I appreciate any additional suggestions, as for those two mark, they are a little too close to my longsword for my liking though they do look nice. Maybe Ill look into them in the future
Edit: nevermind I found a review for the Hanwei, so I'm going to consider it, but if anyone has any lighter/ different suggests I'd appreciate them

Hi, Joe. Hanwei is an excellent manufacturer, but the edges on their Euro swords tend to be somewhat hit or miss in terms of sharpness; Kult of Athena, pretty much the #1 vendor anywhere, will touch up the edge for you if you ask for it in the special instructions box during checkout. As for options, J beat me to the claymore, which was pretty much exactly what I thought when I saw this thread. I managed to find 3 other options for you, however, I want to let you know ahead of time that all three are compromises on your specs: First is the Hanwei Antiqued Bastard Sword. The blade is two inches shorter than your desired specification and it lacks side rings, but otherwise, it's a fairly good sword from what I've heard, particularly since they fixed the pommel issue they had a few years back. Second is the Windlass Steelcrafts English Two Hand Sword. Again, no side rings, but it certainly meets your length and weight requirements. The main problem is that Windlass' longer swords have a reputation for being whippy on account of their near lack of distal taper; others can explain it much better than I can, so I won't even try, but it's something to be aware of. It may not be the best in the thrust as a result. Lastly, the Cold Steel Great Sword. This has everything you want, but is a bit overweight; by almost a full pound, in fact. It's still a half pound lighter than the Lowlander, though. Another major problem (to me) is that it no longer comes with a scabbard, so you would have to make your own, commission one, or do without.

I can vouch for the Hanwei Bastard Sword. It is really a 2-handed sword with the grip about 9 inches. I have actually bought 3 of them over the last few years as they handle great.

Thanks guys! I've narrowed it down to the Hanwei Bastard sword, the hanwei claymore, and the english two hand sword. The only problem is that KOA is out of the english two hander. And I don't feel like paying the extra seventy bucks from Windlass' distributor. I'm going to look for other reputable sites selling the two hand sword, but if not I'll decide between the hanweis

Because of windlass' reputation as kind of 'whippy' --especially on a sword this long-- I think I'm going to go with the Hanwei Bastard sword because it's longer than my cold steel longsword, and it has a very substantial grip. Plus I honestly think 5 lbs 3 oz at a PB of 5 and 3/8 would be too weighty for me compared to the 3lbs 10 oz at a similar POB
Thanks for all your help guys!

While these are out of your range right now, if in the future you have the money you could look at Lutel Handicrafts' zweihander swords. I understand they're excellent products as well as being based to a fair extent off historical originals; they've been commented on favorably at MyArmoury. Just a thought.

Second that. I've seen Lutel zweihanders up close; they're period *and* functional for stage combat. I recommend them.

Wow, I looked at that website, and damn are some of their sword beautiful. Once I have that type of money to spare in my later years, I will definitely get some of those. Alas, I am only a college student and thus spending 6-800 on a sword would be a little insane for me

Lil' bit of thread necromancy here, but I just got the WSC English Two-Hander and I am pleasantly surprises by how not whippy it is. When held out horizontally with the flat facing the ground the is virtually no dip in the blade. I will do a full review once my weather warms up a touch.
