Hello everyone, I'm interested in some segmented/plated vambraces, similar to the Altair ones, though they don't have to be. www.kultofathena.com/product.asp ... +Vambraces I'm hoping there are some that are metal so that they will offer protection as well as be worn for looks (which is one of my primary reasons). Some reviews mentioned that the above ones aren't that awesome looking and the leather sucks, so I'm wondering if anyone here knows of some good ones?

There are possible replacements and alternatives to those. I'm just on before the kids wake up for presents and I have to run to work, but i'll try and get you some alternatives this afternoon/evening... How close/similar do you want them to be to the Altair ones?

They don't have to look exact. :-)

The suede part of the vambraces is piss-easy if you have some experience working leather; just measure your arm at the wrist and below the elbow, cut some pieces of leather to size in three bands and stitch them together with buckles and straps. That's for the right arm; left arm has more bands, apparently, and each individual plate of the vambrace is held to a band by rivets.
Making this would be fairly simple, honest, and you could even etch the plates. Could probably do it for under $20 if you can get lucky with a bag of leather scraps from a craft store and thin metal plates from, say, Home Depot or Lowe's. Main issue is making the metal plates, you'll want a hacksaw and files for that. Good luck...

Jeff beat me to it, but essentially that's it. I'm having issues extracting all my leather patterns from the .rar I compressed them to.

I have Ezio's vambrace. I think it's pretty sweet! But there's no metal on it. And I don't have the experience or tools to shape metals. Hurts when you hit it and it's comfortable. Michael

It may be a metal finish to the leather to tone it silver.. Which is a right bugger to do.

More likely the Windlass/MRL prop is plastic or resin. Doesn't really surprise me; I understand their costumes/props are on the cheapish side. If you're willing to just tool thick leather, that's a little easier to do than etching metal, and silver or aluminum paint is an easy enough way to make it faux-metal for a day (the flexing of the leather will gradually crackle and flake off the paint).

I'll reveal a slight trade secret i've heard of, but not tested. Was going to hold it back until I did test, but if someone can do it before me, more power to them...
Acrylic paint mixed w/ fabric medium. This will create a dye/paint that will soak in and dye the leather. My brother, a leather worker for longer than i've been alive (adoptive brother, for those wondering) has seen SCA grade armor done in white and gold that didn't crack or flake, that was done via this method. No ratio was given though.

Ah, okay. These things are harder to find than I thought lol.
I never worked with leather so making one will have to wait someday...
There aren't anything else in production somewhat resembling those (except for the Windlass ones) right? I've seen some of the segmented arm pieces Romans wore, but they don't overlap...
