First off Happy Holidays to all :-) Was just wondering if anyone has thought of or actually HAS put a wakizashi tsuka on a katana ? Probably look weird, make it top heavy, ....but has anyone done it?

I assume what your talking about would be a super short tsuka on a katana, like 5-6", obviously this would require cutting down the nakago of the katana. I dont think it would work at all.
also, I agree it would change the pob badly.

Thought about it. Definitely doable, though you still can't have a shorter tsuka then your nakago is long.
Anyway, it would move the POB up the blade somewhat. I don't think it would make the sword unuseable, but you would essentially get a kind of dao - the Chinese had a sort of dao that was basically just a katana blade fitted with a single-handed dao hilt. So, sure, it can be done.

There are some that has tried putting a basket hilt on a katana blade. Could be done with light blades with much taper I guess, but I would seriously consider shortening about three inches on a normal blade.
But it won't be much different from using a katana one-handed. There is not much weight in the tsuka and nakago to counterweigh the POB, so the second hands placement is essential to control it. The cutting effiency will be lowered quite a bit.

Here's a pic guys of what I have. My buds Wak is on top ( 20 blade 8.25 tsuka) My blade (middle) 28 with a 7.25 nakago (WEIRD) My buds katana 28 blade 11 tsuka
Hiroshi &Anders -doesn't look like I'd have to cut the nakago. Ichiban- if I get a heavy tsuba would that help POB?
I'm new to all this but it looks like this blade I picked up has a wak tang....doesn't it?
Could I just buy a 10in tsuka and cut it down maybe?

Is that habaki duct taped? Are you certain this is a real blade and not a SLO/wallhanger? If it's a wallhanger you can put whatever size tsuka you want on there cause it really shouldn't be swung anyway... If it is a real blade a relatively short nakago isn't too much of a problem so long as the tsuka is properly made with good quality materials. A good tsuka could safely and easily add 2" or more over the nakago.

Yep its duct tape. I mirror polished the brass. Tape is not to mess it up. The blade is TH 1060. Its just a weird nakago. So the best way would be to make a tsuka to fit that tang?... thoughts on a production tsuka already made ?... and cut it down a few inches? ......any suggestions so I can make this safely swingable .. thanks guys..

A production tsuka from a different sword probably wouldn't fit and even if it did it can almost be guaranteed to fit poorly. Ideally you'd make (or have made) a tsuka specifically for that blade. Do you still have the tsuka that it came with? Cutting that down to your desired size would probably be your next best option.

Also if the tang already has a mekugi hole drilled, a production tsuka wouldn't fit either as the holes almost certainly wouldn't line up.
Like Krelian said, you need to make a tsuka for it or have someone make one. Katana tangs are wider than wak tangs for the most part, and trying to hammer a wak tsuka on would be likely to crack if not break entirely the tsuka. If you have the original tsuka and it's in good shape, then cut some off the end of that one and you'll be set.

Short tsuka for a katana blade? I think you will fall in kyu-gunto style. It's possible but will feel different.

You can make a tsuka longer with 2(2.5) inches than nakago and will still be safe to swing around. Try to make (order) a custom one based on nakago dimensions and this rule.

Thx guys....well after researching on how to make one, I changed my mind and ordered one. It was from a ebay seller HW hotsteel. I believe. They had dif sizes so I asked them if they made a 9 in tsuka. They said no but if I send the measurements of the nakago they would be happy to make me a custom one. Even got to pick ito, same, and fittings. If its cool I'll do a review of it when it comes. Gonna be 3 weeks though.

Oh if that works out well let us know making a tsuka is a semprini. So much easier with Euros...

Click "Post reply" (not quick reply), and look below the three buttons that say "save" "Preview" and "submit". There should be a section for options. Check the last box that says "Notify me when a reply is posted."
