Is it my eyes that deceive me or just a website typo?

Not sure if I am thrilled or dismayed. On one hand, that is fantastic and I must get one. on the other hand, Badger Blade bastard Sword, Windlass Spatha, or not selling a kidney, must choose 2 of the 3. now I really love that sword

I vote for the Kris. While the scabbard isn't entirely historical (its very Filipino in construction, which is actually a good thing), the blade is outstanding. I have one, and its one of my favorites, easily in the top three.

Hi everyone;
New guy here, just ordered a KC Spatha today to go with my Windlass Pompeii Gladius. Wanted a KC gladius, couldn't find one.
Any information on handling with the shape of pommel? There was some discussion earlier in the thread that the one on the KC spatha may be sub optimal in this regard.
It was a near run between the KC Spatha and the Windlass Migration Era Sword. Probably get it next, if funding permits - be couple months though. Hoping I made the right choice!
Thanks in advance for any info. Aetius

The KC Spatha is much like any of the other late Roman Spatha, or the Migration era swords patterned from them. The hilt is short, so much like the viking or migration swords, the grip is more suited for handshake rather than hammer grip.
Between the grooved grip and the pommel, retention isnt an issue. The sword is actually pretty comfortable, and I have big hands. Handling is great, its broad blade and has good heft and weight, but the POB is close to the guard, so it's actually much more agile that you might think.
It is capable of big powerful cuts, but retains a strong thrust. Fit and finish on the one I have is great. The only possible criticism I have is that the wood used on the pommel is a hardwood, and attractive, but will take dents. All wood will, but compared to the wood used in the scabbard, it is softer.
The scabbard is great. Very Filipino in construction, but its a very solid well put together hardwood scabbard. Wood grain in mine was very attractive.

Thanks Arwyn;
Your comprehensive evaluation very much fits with the sword! Had to leave town on a family emergency the day it arrived so all I could do is look it over once then pack it away. But now that I'm back I can safely say this blade is a keeper and highly recommend it to others! Balance, heft, fit of grip to hand - all are excellent and any fears of an uncomfortable pommel are unfounded. This sword feels like an extension of my arm and is very natural!
Haven't had a chance to do any cutting with it yet but I can hardly wait!
Best, Aetius

Glad to hear your liking it. I think its an excellent blade for the price, and an excellent blade even compared to some higher dollar offerings.

I got one a few weeks ago. The fit and finish is very good. The sword feels quite light and yet a bit tip heavy. The POB on mine is 6.25" from the guard. Given that the guard is already a tad over an inch thick, the balance feels more like 7.25" from the guard. This is okay for more authoritative slashing but that leads to my next observation.
Because the grip is pretty much round as opposed to oval or rectangular, edge alignment is a bit tricky. The sharp edges of the pommel do dig into my tender palms by the wrist a bit. I'll have to sand that area down a little.
It sound like I'm complaining but I'm not. I expected these qualities (except the POB). The whole package is simple and elegant. I like it! I'll get around to cutting something with it eventually but for now, it sits pretty on the top rack as the first Roman spatha in my collection.

While it may not be on the Kris Cutlery website anymore, it IS on the Kult of Athena site, still in stock. I actually ordered one just a few days ago.

Are you hammer gripping the sword or handshake grip? I noticed that issue with a hammer grip, but not with the handshake.

The handshake grip helps but the edges of the pommel still feel a bit too sharp. I just need to round about 1" of the edges near the grip and it should be more comfy.

Hmm, just checked KOA and see that the KC Spatha is on backorder. Not good. I'm still hoping to get one of their Gladii and a Celtic sword to boot, and had considered a spare Spatha (one for cutting and one for display).
Hope KC is still knocking 'em out so they'll be back in stock soon.
Best, Aetius

Try calling Cecil- by all accounts he is a very pleasant guy to deal with. I think recently KC made a switch to a different forge so there could be all kinds of changes to products...

Cecil is a really nice guy. KC apparently has gone to more Chinese forges than they used to use. Seems that his Filipino smiths were not very reliable and he was having a hard time filling orders.
The only major difference so far has been in steel, most of the Chinese stuff is 1095 instead of 5160.

I have been interested in this spatha for quite some time. After reading the remarks on this thread, I finally decided to order one from KoA on Aug. 01. Looks like I might have gotten one of the last ones that they had in stock. I hope that KC will be back in production soon.
