I've been browsing around for my next sword and have settled on getting a ninjato, mostly for the aesthetic appeal, being a fan of straight swords. However, i noticed that most of the ninjatos offered online tend to have blades that are less wide than your typical katana. is there anywhere i can find a decent beater ninjato that has the blade width of a katana?

Well, if you look at the Iga & Kouga Ninja-to from Hanwei, they're both almost the same width as a normal katana produced by the same; in fact, the difference is so miniscule you wouldn't notice it unless you were told about it (compare: Iga width = 32mm, Lion Dog width = 33mm; Bamboo Mat = 32.7mm). Even the cheap Musashi or Masahiro Ninja-to have about that width; the only functional one that doesn't is the Hanwei practical, but at 28.6mm wide, it's not exactly a rapier.

That i did not know, though the hanwei ninjatos are a bit out of my price range. ive been browsing around the internet, and ryansword *waits to get bricked* seems to have some decent looking ones, though ive read both good and bad about them, some saying they sell complete crap, while others have said that they have purchased decent blades from them. the masahiro tsunami ninjato is also tempting, but ive heard they are just a reseller. sounds like it's a catch-22 either way around. any insight?

So far, I'd recommend Hanwei in regards to the fact that they have a good rep. As for your 'blade width' requirement? Well, Cheness offers this: sbg-sword-store.sword-buyers-gui ... iyuri.html The downside is, of course, that the blade isn't straight, per your requirements. However, I own one, and I have no complaints: It's sharp, durable, takes a beating and still cuts extremely well. --Edward

Avoid Ryansword at all costs. Everything I've heard regarding them is that some of their cheaper stuff isn't bad for the price, but the majority of it is pretty terrible. A senior member recommended that they were simply for those who wanted something to look at; a wall-hanger, in other words. As for Masahiro, they're not the best, but I have heard good things about them. There's a review or two on the main site that state they're mostly entry level swords, but still fairly decent. And lastly, there's the Musashi Koga; my understanding is that, at 60$, it's pretty decent for the price. You can get it on Kult of Athena in either a plain blade or a black blade, so you've got a few choices.

If you want a wide ninjato, you could perhaps contact Huawei in China and commission one. It'd probably fall in at approximately the same price as Hanwei's Iga and Koga if you want it all kitted out; if you're willing to do it yourself, you could probably get it for just a hundred or so. Only problem is there might be a bit of a wait...

Wow, thanks for the quick replies guys. After reading what you've posted, i think I'm going to get the Masahiro Tsunami, seems like the best choice for my money, as the Musashi Koga looks a little bland in my opinion. Maybe sometime in the future I'll contact Huawei and have one commissioned.

Dear Mr. HeWhoLikesSwords ;
If you want to take the time, please go on E bay, and type into the search line the word, "chokuto", and you will see a variety of very nice straight japanese style blades, of varying price and quality. One of these might fit your needs.
Respectfully;
Paul R. Ward
