cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0722395848 This popped up on ebay. 4 days left on bidding. The seller hasn't actually stated that this is anything of particular significance. WHAT A BLOODY JOKE!!! That my friends is a sabre of the Chasseur a Cheval de la Garde Imperial. Any picture of Napoleon on Campaign shows him encircled by a cordon of wildly overdressed Hussars. More correctly the Mounted Chasseurs. One unit in particular carried that saber. It's not is the best of shape, but as a relic it is fairly complete. I couldn't help poking at the bid and was shocked that the reserve price was only $600.00. It only took 5 mins for some heavy weight buyer to slap my hand with a trump bid of $10.00. I'm gonna watch this one develop. I'm guessing $2500.00 when the buyers wake up to what this is.

In the cold light of morning, my enthusiasm for this piece has faded. Washed out brass of the hilt and the lack of display of a "versailles" mark on the hilt would raise alarm bells probably a highly doctored Chevalier D'Auvernge copy. ( Both WE and CD'A use a heart shaped drag on their scabbards rather than the club shape.
Have messaged the dealer to clarify his post. Don't want to say fake. Replica is polite (as long as it isn't trying to pass for the real thing).

It is a fake: one of those antiqued replicas that are sold as the real thing. I'm pretty sure this is one of those WE and not the Chevalier d'Auvergne and there are many hints to that.

Very sad thing, I hope no one will get scammed by this.

The scabbard drag was a red flag for me...pleased I noticed before doing anything stupid.

Don't mind making a fool out of myself. Not happy that I might have blundered into causing someone else to make a costly mistake. I'm embarassed. E bay makes very little effort to curb this abuse. The seller doesn't actually say one way or another whether this is a replica or real. He simply held the sword out and waited to attract afficianado's. So much for that fiasco. For me a silver lining. Stumbled into sale of a very good conditioned Fr M1854 Heavy Cav Pallasch; and won that one. THis was the replacement for the Napoleonic AN XIII. Blade is immaculate. The hilt will clean up beautifully. Scabbrd will have to see.

That m1854 looks lovely, I'll be very interested to hear how it handles.

Just to share an ebay detail: I read the ebay bidding and retraction rules and was intimidated as to level of difficulty imposed on retractions. After trying to communicate with the seller and failing I went back to the retraction page and filed the item sales number then called up the reasons for retraction.
The last of three options was "cannot reach the seller". True. So I checked off on that and hit the return; expecting a follow on page.
No need, the system popped a screen up that said, "your bids on the item have been removed".
Gee. Easy.
That is the first time in two years I felt justified and needful of doing so. Something good to know.
The bid leader had already bailed out before me for the same reason. One poor soul is holding the bag.

The end of the story: Me and the lead bidder bailed out on the excuse of recieving no answer from the seller to our questions. That left a major ebay user holding the bag. Wensday nite the owner finally put a note on the sales page to the effect that he had suddenly realized this was a beautiful "aged" replica. ( Still overpriced by $400.00  )
With that the big user finally retracted his bid because of the "change in sellers discription".
Left some rookie user with a below reserve bid. Still he and another rookie spent the last two days bidding up to $152.00 before the merciful end of the sale. With the $50.00 shipping charge they could both get a second offer to take this abused Weaponedge India home for the holidays.
Lesson learned on the pitfalls of Ebay.
