I was browsing around some sites and I came across this: www.swordsoftheeast.com/bushidoj ... ana-1.aspx Thoughts? I don't know what brand that is. I just think it looks interesting. 1045 is the minimum for cutting, right? Does the black lacquer affect anything? I'm not gonna get it, just curious.

Yes. Though it may contain a bit less than .45% carbon if they didn't compensate for the little bit lost in folding (though the loss might be so minor that it's not worth worrying about)...
The black lacquer on the saya? No. I don't know what makes the blade appear black in this model but it shouldn't have any real positive or negative effect on anything, though I doubt it's a lacquer.
I tend to automatically ignore any bargain priced folded or laminated blades anyway, but that's just my preference/opinion.

Eh. $119 seems about the most I would pay for such a blade, though I think you're paying mostly for the mother-of-pearl inlay on the saya at this point.
The lacquer affects nothing.
If you --or someone else-- gets it, please post a review. I'd be curious to see how it performs.

They don't even show you the bamboo inlay in the photo. I think it looks kinda nifty from the photo though. I have no space to do any actual cutting. But people here have convinced me that my first practical sword should be a musashi 1060 that I can take apart and put back together (I have a musashi shirasaya but I wouldn't call that practical). After I've done that we'll see if I'm still interested in something like this.

For about $10 more than this you could get a Munetoshi Take from Swordnarmory. I've had one and it was pretty good. Fittings are about on par with a Shirakawa, but the blade is quite a bit better. forum.sword-buyers-guide.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3926Sorry about the not great pictures.
