So I've not used my katana too much, but the ito has come loose to the point where the the hilt ornaments (can't remember, mekugi was it?) can move around. Not only am I too afraid to try re-wrapping it, but the menkugi pegs won't come out! So I can't even remove the tsuka to try. What should I do?

use a punch and hammer but dont beat the heck out of it. You dont want to ruin the mekugi's. Just tap them out....if light taps dont do it, then tap abit harder. Repeat the process if it doesnt come out that time. remember that mekugi's are only one way. Check to make sure the side your punching through is the small side. If your hitting the large side, your just making it harder to get it out and could damage the tsuka.

Ah there's a problem in that too, I'm not sure which side is the small side! I'm supposing it's the side where the same has been pushed up by the peg.

If your looking at the Mune ( back of the blade) it goes from left to right....so you want to punch it out right to left when facing the mune.

They still won't come out! Maybe I should just leave it as it is...

Which katana is it? Some don't have removable pegs/tsukas.

It's an Michiko katana, which might be made by ryumon, not sure. It says that it can be disassembled in the manual and on the website I bought it off.

Okay. As far is I've been able to tell, the mekugi almost always come out in the direction that the standard grip when held would dictate. The top hand is usually the right, so the fat side of the mekugi would be on the right, so that the palm would offer added security against it coming out. So I'd hammer from the left on the top, from the right on the bottom.
Also, if you have a freezer capable of it, you may want to try the freezing trick that VeloZero outlined. It would cause everything to shrink, so it would not have so tight a fit.

Just thinking outside the box - I have done some leather wraps on katana that had crappy ito wrap.
