Ok, so for a sword under $100 dollars what can I truly expect, but Musashi Swords have no name! It is impossible for me to do further research on a particular katana other than what they tell me about it! Question: Im looking at a Shirakawa Katana (SS811BK #130) for my first katana because I am drawn to the tsubas that depict dragons. Is Musashi just producing one sword for each series and putting different tsubas on them? And why are some sites selling swords like the wind dragon, and bushidos and shoguns but these swords are not listed on musashis website? How can True Swords have more information on this particular sword than what Musashi has cared to list on their site? Furthermore, just for discussion, is a sword without a name, not a sword without a story? And is a sword without a story not a sword without a soul? Maybe Musashi has left to the consumer to name their own blades, or maybe it's a cheap sword made to make money and Musashi doesn't really care and you get what you pay for? Just some questions I had before I order a blade and a discussion I thought would be interesting, thank you all in advance, this is a great site!!

It's the one thing that is confusing as hell about musashi that they don't really have any names for their swords like other companies do. Usually you can tell which swords are in the same series, like the shirakawa like you stated, the difference between different swords in the same series are just different koshirae (fittings). I think that some blades are made just for trueswords as you do not find them on musashis site. I think they put in orders for different types of blades; like why you find kissaki-moroha zukuri and shobu zukuri musashi blades on trueswords.
Musashis are generally really good for their money and not giving them some lame name like some other companies do (like that guy on ebay ughh... like: Vampire Snake Fang Katana lol) doesn't cheapen them at all. Remember samurais didn't see their swords as objects possessing souls etc... they just saw them as tools. It's movies and stories that romanticized this belief or aspect.

Not to mention this beast. Never seen it anywhere on Musashi's site, but seen it fairly regularly on Trueswords for a couple years.

What?!? Are you telling me you *wouldn't* buy an *awesome* katana called "Vampire Snake Fang" for the low-low price of $800? (/sarcasm)

Vendor: That there's the Black Vampire; be careful! She bites. Clive: How much? Vendor: $1,349.99 *Shing!* Graeme: Aren't you gonna get it? Clive: Jisha bedjet! (I have no idea if that's spelled right  )

Pretty much.
Because MusashiSwords.com isn't the official site for the manufacturer. They're just a vendor that resells those swords. I don't believe the site PaulChenHanweiSwords.com is an official Hanwei website either, just some vendor who made that their site name.
I Frammenti Di Fede hit the nail on the head. To a carpenter a saw is a tool regardless of any name you give it, a sword is in no way different.
I'm fairly ceartain all the overseas factories that make swords just do it to make money even though some put more care into creating a better quality product than others. That said, Musashi is a good sword for the money (in the same way a Kia is a good car for the money), it is the cheapest "real" Japanese-style sword worth consideration.

It's actually called the Samurai 3000; I was quoting the movie Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Sean of the Dead & Hot Fuzz), where they go to comic-con in the US and see it there. It's a jab at how some vendors at cons charge ridiculous prices for crap (the Samurai 3000 is a 60$ wallhanger that would break if you even looked at it wrong).

pay the $80 bucks for a musashi shirikawa 700's or 800's line. send me some pics and $100 bucks and it will give you a name and story for it! extra $100 bux and ill even research up a legit story that isnt taken by another sword!
disclaimer: the second story may not be a very good one, as most of those have already been taken. but i will make sure its true and fits!

I do like the idea for that samurai 3000 sword.. Is there anything similar to the handle made with katana like blades that is not a fake lightsaber?

Production-wise? Not that I'm aware of. One of the custom forges in the "Manufacturers and Vendors" section might be willing to custom-make something like it, *and* make it utilitarian . --Edward

Though, if you spent that much money on that design, you could probably get several traditional ones cheaper, semi-customs and the like.

Well I mean for practical uses, you would not have to have it re-wrapped if got loose as mine is becoming loose now.

I wondered the same - why my Musashi has no name. The SwordNAmmmory invoice says Musashi Handmade Bamboo Katana. Now the certificate has some Japanese characters next to Name and one character is the Katana. But other than length, size, serial #, it's a pre-printed form with Japanese characters. Odd. Nothing on the site ....

BTW, I am new here. Hello. And, BTW again, the Musashi I have was ... ... USD149.99 but 50% off. $74.98. It is black, 40.5 inches (28.5 + 11), 1060 steel, tempered, real hamon. It is still sharp and seems durable after 1.5 years. Full tang, double pinned, claims ray wrapping. I can trim a 2 litre soda bottle down in 6-7 cuts, first cut taking the cap off with like .25 inches - usually. It is razor sharp. And I do "golf" a bottle once in a while.

I think that handle is very interesting and different. I would consider buying with a real blade.

if you follow the link here reviews.swords.com/katana-tang-anomalies/ you will see a crap sword that had some fancy name disassembled and disposed. but you will also see a musashi (black bamboo is name on true swords) disassembled and well made.
