I was trying to remove the tsuka on my Hanwei Practical Ninja-to (which I later found was glued on in addition to the mekugi) and, suffice to say, it wasn't going anywhere. Then I had the brilliant idea of sticking the whole thing in the freezer for an hour. The steel contracted and it was possible to get the thing out without reducing the wood into scrap.
I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I though I would share it.

That's a good idea man, and I'm assuming you have a larger chest freezer for that. After you removed it from there, did you just use a wood block and mallet to tap it out, or was it more involved with the glue?

Just one of those side by side stand up fridge freezer combos. I had to put it in and close the door realy fast as it wouldn't balance upright in there on it's own. Just make sure anyone else in the house knows that a sword will fall out as soon as you open the freezer door.
The glue took some more determined whacking that I would have liked, but all I used was a hammer and a block of wood. Prior to freezing it was going absolutely nowhere though.

 I can just hear it now, "what the hell is this sword doing in the freezer?!?"
