Hi my name is micah and i am brand new on this forum.... if i offend anybody or am doing something wrong i am sorry i am just under the assumption that this is where the new members ask there questions..... well here we go i just purchased a imperial japan era western style saber, now why i am here is because i do not understand the sword fully i know the cheapy $80-$150 parade swords the blades are roughly square cut and the blade goes straight to the guard, however my sword has a habaki which i have not seen on the cheap parade swords.... also the fake hamon on the parade swords very even like 1/2 inch spaced scalloped all the way down, now my blade the hamon is very nice wave looks hand done because it is not even and it reall does not look etched or however it was done... also the cheap parade swords i found do not have a clip to keep it in the sheath, mine has the thumb button clip to keep it in the sheath the end of clips goes through the guard next to the habaki and also i forgot to mention the blade is very nicely finished it is nice chopy square it is smooth and nicely ground and that hamon it is not a katana blade in saber fittings it is a saber blade the thing blade but it looks made like a hand made katana blade and has the shape just slimer with a 1 handed grip.... has the black handle with wire wrap and bronze? guard with cherry blossom and the leaves or pedals behind the front so it is military the sheath is nickel? now i have been trying to find any information on this an i come to dead ends everywhere i live in small town minnesota and when you do find a ww2 katana someone sharpened the semprini outta the blade and i slighty cry haha anyway viewtopic.php?f=9&t=7081that is the link to a fellow trying to find info on his sword and it looks like mine it has the habaki and clip with blade and has a nice blade however his is in terrible shape and mine is in mint condition no rust the wire on the handle that wraps the black part is all good i took the gamble on paying $275 at a antique store and i am hoping the guy thought it was a regular parade sword and priced it high for a parade sword but in reality it is a nice piece i am HOPING i do not have it in my possesion yet but it is mine i didnt bring enough money to get it lol and it was several hours from me so my aunt that lived there picked it up for me and im waiting to get it i had my 4 year old twins with me and didnt exam it fully i dont know if i could remove the grip and see the tang i do not know these swords i bought it in hopes that its worth more then $275 and i can find someone who will trade a ww2 katana for it... or partial trade??? just any help at all i will get pictures up as soon as i can but i got it on the gamble due to how nice it was and if its garbage or not worth much it will look nice in a collection at least..... once again i am new to the forum i hope we all get along i am a huge katana enthusiast have always loved them my down fall is im only 26 and still naive to everything so hi folks my names micah and i really hope to learn from you all thanks!

Hello and welcome to the SBG forum. What you may have is a police or army parade sword with customized/modified blade + locking mechanism. I suggest you upload some pictures so that members might recognized the type of sword & give you the correct identification. Whatever you do, do not try to disassemble the sword unless you have some proper guidance (and even then you should think twice).

Hey, welcome aboard! I'm sure that there are people on here that will be able to give you a fairly complete lowdown on your Gunto when you are able to take some shots of it. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello, welcome to the sbg forum I can try to help you out once you have pics I suggest you take a picture of the tip, the habaki, the handle, the backstrap, the guard, the saya, a whole picture of the blade, and a good close up picture of both sides of a section of the blade. :3 Anyway $275 for a kyugunto might be a good gamble. And yes please cry when you see a ww2 katana sharpened the semprini out of the blade, cuz it was raped nuff' said anyway I do not have the full details on how to remove kyu gunto tsuka because I am not familiar with their construction, although I think that the Backstrap and pommel is there by screwing it on the threaded tang end (yes some nihonto was partially raepd to get them inside kyu gunto koshirae, although I think this was not always the case

Well awesome i like his attitude and humor! Well not humor poorly sharpening a ww2 katana is not funny to me its depressing but yeah you know what i mean....... im so anxious to get this thing home uhggggggg the wait!!!! Well still in search for wwii katana hopefully one day a authentic early edo era katana will be in my hands....... but i also was checking o the david goldberg production bamboo cutter katana seemed pretty decent for functional katana i like the simple more combat look....

ehh? I have the same feelings whenever I see a gunto like that, I really do feel that it was raped by some nut who was overly attracted to the myths associated with the gunto, and to the shinyness  . Are you looking for world war II katana? there are tons of gendai-to (gunto made in the traditional manner) and showa-to (Gunto for the not so rich officer) in some sites like www.aoi-art.com, www.nihontoantiques.com and this one too www.japanesesword.comBut I still stand that seeing the blade first in your hand before buying is much more recommended, although the scans or pics on those sites are pretty good

Ok i finally received my kyu gunto and i now know more about it.... it has about 3/4 of the back strap of the handle cover in cherry blossom plant design also it has the 16 ray sun on end of back strap ( imperial emporer insignia) so who ever owned this between 1870-1886 was a high ranking officialof some sorts. Also it has the button lock clip(working perfect nice tight fit) and a very nice habaki with the angled rain scratched carved in it. The blade has a bo-hi that stops right at the habaki and the blade has a very destinct hamon thats not symetrical but very active with dots of temper behind it(hard to see in my pix sorry) the blade is thick almost the thickness well as thick as a katana but from back to edge it starts at 3/4-1 inch then tappers like a katana just sslim the blade looks just like a skinny katana blade... this sword is in amazing shape polish is very nice handle very clean but the scabard ha some of the nickle missing on the tip and llight surface rust by the loop otherwise very clean very shiny no dents. oh and there is a stamp on the top of guard right in front of the curled up loop, it is a diamond with accents on each corner and a kanji in the middle, I am pretty sure i have seen this on katana tangs....i am posting pix right now!

I think it's a command sabre High Ranking? maybe, it's half engraved unlike the company officers who only had 1/4 of their backstraps engraved Probably between Company officer to Field Officer
I won't be so sure to call the blade as a murata-to but it's definitely not nihonto I'd say it was one of the blades produced when the Shin-gunto was introduced. Kyu-gunto were still being sold even after the shin-gunto was introduced. that might be the explanation for the existence of the habaki. the habaki is also a standard type for shin-gunto
The hamon is etched, much like how murata-to were made.
The leather is cow leather It may be a sword of the Imperial Guard hence the existence of the Imperial Crysanthemum. Maybe before the Imperial Guard (the owner not the whole) actually shifted to shin-gunto? Some officers preffered to carry kyu-gunto than shin-gunto, mostly the old officials did this.

Yup I always say Any good koshirae of kyu-gunto carries a good value
Any well preserved non machine made blade is worth preserving. And any blade with a mystery behind it is much better to own than knowing everything about it and smile and forget.
And plus I think it might be an imperial guard sword which would be awesome.
