Hi, I'm new to the forums. A little background: I'm 28, live in AZ in the good old US of A. I've participated (and I use this loosely) in various eastern martial arts disciplines but never anything so formal in the way of weapons training like Kenjiutsu(Sp?) etc. I've had some limited formal background on tanto, bo and katana handling and learned a few basic katas but was planning on taking a formal class fairly soon. If there's any other Az sword and/or martial weapons practitioners studying JSA i'd appreciate any class suggestions.
On to the original topic:
Okay so I had to go to work right after it was delivered, I only had enough time to unsheathe the blade and feel the solid wrap of the ito over the tsuka in my hands for a couple of slow practice chops but OMFG, I'm in love. I'm kind of a late comer to this, I only just started doing research about 2 weeks ago roughly on swords and katanas in particular. First I'd like to say that the articles, forum posts and reviews on this place have been utterly critical in my decision to go with the Cheness Tenchi as my first live blade martial weapon. I ordered mine with the fuller (bo-hi) and it virtually SINGS when swung even at low speed. I haven't had a chance to cut anything but I feel like a 16 year old fawning over his first car that he can finally drive to prom all over again... so on that note: THANK YOU ALL OF YOU.
Shifting gears, I am pretty sold on the workmanship of the Tenchi a cursory review showed (at first glance) solid craftsmanship and precision mounting and setting of the fittings. I knew to expect this after reading the review from Paul and a few others online from other Tenchi owners on other forum sites but I will do a full strip down when I can to make sure everything is in order. My question is, being new i'm perfectly fine getting something with a solid reputation over looks and more than happy with the Cheness I just got. In fact I'm thoroughly excited the Tenchi fits me perfectly according to the sizing guide alone! However, I was looking again, (oh interwebz how you bankrupt me!) and I really really like the 30" blade Nagasa which according to the site is still in stock. I'm fairly certain something this long is essentially an O-Katana for me being so short but are there any large sword users who own and more importantly cut with their large swords that have any advice? I mean, would it be worth it? Or is a weapon that's essentially just shy of 2/3rds my full body length when standing NOT a weapon meant for anything other than display? As a disclaimer, i'm pretty casual about cutting, want to simply buy a few Tatami mats first and a cutting post and see if its something I'll be doing often. And If you have concerns, no I really wasn't planning on using it to cut right after receiving. I only wanted to see if I can snag one before Cheness runs out since their BOLDED notice is that this is a trial run. I'm foregoing the 33" O Katana listed on their site because unless I get a long black coat, grow white hair down to my lower back and change my name to Sephiroth I don't see any safe practical use out of that size of a weapon, but the Nagasa seems like it'd be just long enough to satisfy my large sword itch without making it too ungainly/unwieldy to use in a cutting environment. Any advice is welcome!
Thanks!
