I need advice on my next sword purchase. I know I asked for advice before and got a lot of great answers, but I am in need of a new kind of sword.
The type of sword I am looking for is something that can be applied to urban/rural warfare (lol). I would like something with a two handed grip and a decent sized blade that I could use to deflect (not block) bats, crowbars, etc. I wouldn't mind it if it looked nice too. I am thinking about a Katana or a claymore styled sword. The new AT Tactical sword "Zombie Slayer" looks pretty good too.
I don't need a perfect dueling weapon, just something that can stand a beating if it had to without being overly cumbersome. Cheness, Ronin and Darksword have some blades that meet my ideal and I hear great things about them. I would also like to purchase this sword from either the SBG Store or Reliks, for the convenience. I have also considered Hanwei's Tactical Katana, but I am not sure how durable it is.
Although it may not be the most durable, how is the Hanwei Practical Plus? Would it perform better than a Ronin Dojo Pro?

Hmmm, in an urban or rural situation you have more of a chance of being in a confined space, so a really large blade wouldn't be advised. You have alleys, rooms, trees, cars, ect.
I'd say that for a full sized katana I'd go with the Kris Cutlery 26A. Kris are tough, tough, tough and very well built. This model has a slightly shorter blade than most full sized katanas, so it would be a bit easier to use in a room-sized area. I'd also recommend a Hanwei Tak Wak. It is a tough and sturdy wakizashi, and seems to me to be made for exactly what you want it for. Can easily be used in a room or alley, in trees, or even in a large area.
Also, for something a little different, you could check out one of Hung Shing's Rambo Machetes, or one of Scorpion Swords and Knives Zombie Slayer Machetes.
For something to be purchased at SBG Store, I'd try a Ronin Dojo Pro, or one of those Cheness Oniyuri katanas. the Oniyuri has a shorter blade, made from the TH 9260 that the Tenchi is valued for, but has a longer handle and a full-sized saya. So it looks like you have a giant sword, but in reality you have a Ko-Katana-like weapon.

Thanks for the reply!
I actually own a machete (Gerber BG Parang). I really like it, and I find it would be fantastic weapon for my needs, but I am looking for something longer and two handed. A thicker blade would be awesome too (I should specify that this weapon would be for protection against home invasions against large groups. Not intending on using it, but I like my weapons to have a fictional story to them).
On the other hand, a Kris Cutlery sounds pretty good. Do they ship to Canada?

You may want to look into a Ko-Katana then since you want something two handed, but not too long.

What you want isnt a sword. What you want is a sword shapped crowbar. Luckly I know where you can get one! And beleive me it pains me to recommend these sword like objects... but it's probably what you want. www.badgerblades.com/Their "swords" are very tought. (mainly because the blades have absolutely no distal taper.) Here is a quote from their website. "What do people do with your swords? Whatever they want to. The number of innovative, bizarre or even insane uses for our blades has continued to amaze us. At least one professional jousting troupe has made good use of our weapons since 1997. Our blades have been used to eviscerate washing machines, old stoves, and at least one Subaru. They have also been used to break someone into their car and even as a carving tool by a kosher butcher at a pig roast (can you stand the irony?). "

Another option would be to check out the guys at Zombie Tools. Their weapons are incredibly tough, check them out here: zombietools.net/tools/ They have a video where they test one of their weapons (the Deuce) to destruction and the punishment they put it through is absolutely ridiculous. They're a bit above the $300 soft limit that most people shoot for here, but I think you might like what you find. On a related note, I find it hard to call what they have "swords" since they lack many of the defining qualities of swords - sure they have sharp edges, but their balance is too different, their construction is different, their purpose is different... but that being said they still (IMO) meet your criteria brilliantly.

Hmmm . . . it looks like you're looking for something to be used in a fight. The other katana you mentioned in your post are more geared towards tameshigiri and bottle cutting. I wouldn't recommend those for the description I read above. As mentioned before, Zombie Tools might be the way to go. You might also want to try Ollin Sword Design: ollinsworddesign.com ; some of their "Zombie Defense Collection" might work. Also, Badger Blades and/or Starfire Swords: www.starfireswords.com/--Edward

If it were me I would go with the Zombie Slayer. You know it'll be plenty tough, and feel nice to boot.

Would second talon's recommendation for the Hanwei (Military dadao) Good for both hand use, pretty thick blade and rather intimidating weapon. Cheap too! Or the KC 26 katanas, pretty tough katana too.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have a question: How practical would a European longsword be in this day and age?

Well, if it's going to see use, then it's practical as any other in my opinion. It has two sharp edges, it cuts, it stabs, it works. I think that as long as it has a good temper, then it all really boils down to your personal preferences.

Practicality? For what? So far, there's reenactment and Western Martial Arts training. As a self-defense tool, you'd be better off with something a bit more modern . --Edward

Guns are tough to get in Canada, and the loud bang might alert authorities. The good thing about hoodlums is they barely ever press charges, so a sword with a good reach would be nice. A machete for indoors, a sword for outdoors.
I would love to use a shotgun or something though. that would be scary.

I don't even know if they sell those in Canada.
Unless I first joined a gun club. If I did that, then I could legally purchase a gun that is meant for something other than hunting (after I got my firearms license).

In today's world, using a blade in home defense is likely to end up with you in a body body, my friend. If someone has the audacity to invade your home you'll want to assume they've got a gat too, for your own benefit and for the benefit or those you protect at home. If someone came into my home they'd be within reach of any sword they fancied, at which point I'd have to spread them on the wall with my .44 Please don't plan home security with any blades. The consequences could be dire. Unfortunately guns are quite literally everywhere, even Canada. In parts of England you're more likely to be shot for your watch than you are to get a "good morning" from someone. A lot of the time arming yourself could be your biggest mistake. A person could see you're unarmed and think you're no significant threat if they had a gun levelled at your face, on the other hand if you're brandishing a sword and are willing to use it, you may have just forced them to pull the trigger. However despite all of this; a short sword or a wakazashi would be more suited to combat indoors. Obviously long blades are very difficult to use in confined areas, especially in a melee that'll involve two people grappling for their lives. If you absolutely want a blade thinking it'll give you peace of mind I'd suggest the Tac Wak. It's durable and although it could benefit from a new grip the blade is as strong as you'd expect.
